Default Mike Brown Wins Coach of the Year

Congratulations Mike Brown. I believe him, Stan Van Gundy, Eric Spolstra (spelling?) and Nate McMillan were the most deserving coaches to get it. But I mean come on, how can anyone argue for it not to be Brown? Even though we made the playoffs last year the Cavs improved their record 21 games better, set franchise records and almost tied the NBA record for home record. While other teams did improve better from last year to this year record-wise like Miami and Portland, I think it's harder for the Cavs to improve the way they did since they were already above .500 last year at 45-37, and then improve that by 21 games.

I don't care what people feel about his offensive mind-set. He probably doesn't even have an offensive mind-set. But there's not damn way the Cavs would have gone as deep in the playoffs like they have been with a offensive-first, defense-second coaching system.

I haven't always been the biggest Mike Brown fan, but I think he deserved the award this season. He kept the team functioning while they were dealing with unbelievably bad luck on the injury front. I still don't think he's the greatest X's/O's coach in the world, and anytime a team has the success that the Cavs had, there are about umpteen different reasons why, but he helped keep them very consistent. Unlike years past, they didn't lose a ton of games to poor teams, and the team never lost more than 2 in a row all season.

"Coach of the year" is a subjective award, and I can find several coaches who are better than Mike Brown, but he's gotten the team to buy into his philosophy, and I give him credit for giving up some responsibility on the offensive end. While that says something about his inability to coach offense, it says something about his lack of ego.
