Default Looks as if Devin Harris won't be the MIP

Quote:
The Indiana Pacers are calling a press conference for Tuesday morning, which can only mean one thing: Devin Harris is not going to get his trophy this summer.

Danny Granger has pulled out a comeback in the Most Improved Award ballot, apparently squeaking by Harris in the tally, the Indianapolis Star is reporting. And the Pacers will make it official, having awaited Granger's return from Italy Monday.

Harris, who had a career season -- averaging career highs of 21.3 points and 6.9 assists -- was the odds-on favorite for the award since his hot start in November.

But Granger was just as deserving, if not more consistent for the 36-46 Pacers: The 6-8 forward transformed himself into one of the league's most automatic scorers, averaging career highs of 25.8 points and 5.1 rebounds in his fourth season.

Well he was the MIP in my mind, from 4/5 option with the Mavs to basically 1/2nd option

i see one potential positive here, and that is that harris doesn't need any further massaging of his ego.

he's already proved that he's a top scorer and an all-star. now i'd like to see him become a better defender, leader and facilitator. individual awards have the potential to set that stuff back, despite what the player himself claims in interviews.

Granger kept his fire up through the season, Devin started slipping towards the end there and suffered injuries. It's understandable..but if Devin can keep at it and just keep improving he'll be a fantastic player.

They both were injury riddled, Harris improved the most according to stats, so...

i have to say that that's debatable looking over their 07-08 vs. 08-09 stats.

harris had a slight lead in average scoring improvement, but his shooting efficiency also dropped all the way from .483 down to .438. which means yes, he proved he can score in volume, but how valuable was that, really? meanwhile, granger stayed at exactly his same level of shooting efficiency (.447), proving that the extra shot attempts were apparently worth it.

and yea, you can bring in other numbers (ast's, reb's, steals, etc) to try to provide an edge either way, but at a quick glance they seem to be a wash.

yes, i was rooting for harris, but i really can't argue against granger based on the numbers. it was really close- could have gone either way.

It's about how you finish the season. Granger was on a tear at the end of the season while Devin was injured and not playing his best when he tried to. I think those last 20 games or so have an impact on voting.

And none of us really mentioned that Indiana did finish better than us--even though without playoffs it is a hollow victory.
