Default Most Overrated Position in Basketball

has to be.......the PG/"floor general".

think about it.....

HOW MANY SUPERSTAR PG'S HAVE LEAD THEIR TEAMS TO TITLES.
1)Magic,
2)Zeke..........

3)Chauncy Billups? was he really a superstar in 04?......
4)Dennis Johnson? maybe.......
5)...Jo Jo White?? probably not, cowens was the best player on that team

Out of the top ten pg's of all time, only 2 have won titles as the best player on their team. Guys like Payton, Big O, Stockton, KJ, Marc Jackson, Archibald, Kidd...either won a titles as a sidekick/role player or didnt win any at all

and u have teams like the lakers winning multiple titles with derek fisher

spurs won 2 with a raw tony parker. in the last 2 years tony parker has finally rounded his game, yet the spurs have yet to make it back to the finals, getting ousted in the first round this year.

Celtics winning with raw rondo

THE HEAT WINNING WITH F*CKING WHITE CHOCLATE!

bulls didnt even need a PG, they just basically used scottie

just take a look @ this current year, the 2 best point guards in the nba ousted easily in the first round.

so again, why do nba fans grossly overrate the pg position

I think SG. Sure, it's the most glamourous now, but with only a handful of exceptions, championship teams have required a great Centre or PF more than a great SG, yet we worship the ground SG's walk on.

Retarded thread.

I could argue that the center position is useless, since one can apparently win championships with the likes of Luc Longley, Francisco Elson, Rasho, and whatever scrub started for the Celtics last year.

Hell, for 2 years in a row in the mid-90s, the Finals featured a clash of the titans in the Longley-Ostertag match-up.

hard to say sg is overrated when the GOAT played there, winning 6 title and finals mvps in the process

the fact there are very few prolific pg's in the NBA prove that the pg spot is very underated.. not just anyone can be efficient at the spot...

We would have a bunch of better teams, if there was a heap of stellar pg's in the NBA...

another clown who uses team championships to judge and rank individual players.

when will this madness end.

"oh, this guy has 4 rings but this guy only has 2, so the first guy is obviously better"

"he couldnt win a ring as the main guy, he was more of a sidekick guy, so all-time his ring doesnt count like this other guy's ring because the other guy got a ring as a superstar but this guys ring he was like second fiddle"

seriously. retards.

That's who I had in mind before I wrote "handful of exceptions". All precious GOAT candidates were centres.

your post has little to do with this thread. im arguing that the pg position as a whole is overrated due to the fact that only two superstar pgs have lead their teams to titles, and teams winning multiple titles with average pgs. im not ranking individual players dumbass. now gtfo out of my thread

Because you can with a championship without a good PG? You can win a championship with a weak player at any position, as long as you're stacked at the other 3-4. It's been decades since a team has been put together where you've got 5 superstars starting.

SG for sure, I totally agree with you

I mean look at this:

Kobe(LAL)
Wade(MIA)
T-Mac(HOU)
Iverson(DET)
VC(NJ)
Mayo(MEM)
Hamilton(DET)
Ginobili(SAN)
Roy(POR)
Durant(OKL - SG/SF)
Martin(SAC)
Allen(BOS)
Gordon(CHI)
Zero(WAS)

I mean WOW! What team doesn't have an amazing SG? Either that's an amazing talent pool or the SG position is overrated.

Let's compare another position, the Small Forward

Pierce(BOS)
Iggy(PHI)
Salmons?(CHI)
LeBron(CLE)
Granger(IND)
Artest(HOU)
Gay(MEM)
Anthony(DEN)
Prince(DET)
Butler(WAS)

Ok wow I think I proved myself wrong, off the top of my head I came up with 10 good small forwards and 14 good shooting guards. I HAVE CHANGED MY MIND, THERE IS NO OVERRATED POSITION!

Then again lets try point guard

Rondo(BOS)
Harris(NJ)
Robinson?(NY)
Miller(PHI)
Rose(CHI)
Williams(CLE)
Stuckey(DET)
Ford(IND)
Bibby(ATL)
Mario(MIA)
Nelson(ORL)
Crawford(GSW)
Nash(PHO)
Kidd(DAL)
Brooks(HOU)
Paul(NO)
Parker(SAN)
Williams(Utah)
Billups(DEN)
Westbrook(Thunder)

Ok now I don't know what to think. Maybe I'm just a bad judge of talent but I figure the average sportsfan would rate most of these players as good.

20/30 teams have a good point guard. Then again maybe you guys could critique my lists and figure out what position has the best players, even after we did that would we know if they were 'overrated'? Maybe this is just some sort of golden era for point guards

Center/PG both can dominate offensively but championship winning pgs/centers more defensive oriented.

Here's the way I would describe it:

You can win without a great PG, but if you HAVE a great PG, you will go deep in the playoffs.

Make sense? Let's look at top 10 PG's as ranked statistically by CBSSports.com this year:

. Chris Paul, NO First Round of Playoffs
2. Andre Miller, PHI First Round of Playoffs
3. Derrick Rose, CHI First Round of Playoffs
4. Mo Williams, CLE Eastern Conference Finals, still playing
5. Chauncey Billups, DEN Western Conference Finals, still playing
6. Tony Parker, SA First Round Playoffs
7. Steve Nash, PHO Missed Playoffs
8. Jason Kidd, DAL Second Round Playoffs
9. Deron Williams, UTA First Round Playoffs
10. Jason Terry, DAL Second Round Playoffs

So of top 10 statistically, 9 made playoffs this year, 2 of making Conference Finals. Only Steve Nash is exception. Nash just missed the playoffs, and has previously carried his team deep into playoffs for years.

So apparently, good PG play does make a difference.
