Default Bynum to skip USA minicamp/Sasha playing

June 18, 2009

Andrew Bynum said Thursday he will not participate in the U.S. National Team minicamp in July because he wants to rest and rehab his knee.

The purpose of the camp is to evaluate the 24 young players with the best chance of making Team USA's roster for the 2010 World Championships in Turkey.

Also, Sasha Vujacic will play for Slovenia at the European Championships this summer. Slovenia is in the same group as Spain, which means Vujacic would face good friend Pau Gasol assuming the Spaniard participates in the tournament.

I think this is GREAT news for both players. Bynum really needs to rest his injury knee not 100% yet. Sasha, needs to find his shot/confidence dude has enough energy to be ready for training camp later this year.

Toughts please.

I'd rather see Sasha work with Hodges this summer and get his mechanics in order. Something had changed in his shot and they need to get it back on track. But then maybe he has time for both, maybe a change of venue for a few weeks will be good for him.
Nothing worse in the NBA then a shooter who can't get the shots to drop, you feel bad for the kid, because it's like there's a lid over the hoop. His Shot selection was fine, he wasn't taking bad shots out of the flow of the game, they just would not go down the hole.
That regular season shot in Orlando at the end of the game was his season wrapped up in a nutshell. that stupid ball was half way down the hoop when it clanged around and popped back out.

This is from a selfish Laker perspective... I hope they all (Drew, Pau, Sasha..) skip playing for other teams in order to conserve energy/focus on the following Laker season.. but again thats just me not carring about anyone but the Lakers

^^^Damn good points guy's I must agree with all. Sasha should work with Hodge and everybody else should get rested up over the offseason.

I would also like to add that I would hate for any of these guys to get injured while playing for a different team.

I hate to say it.. but being realistic, the free agent situation with Ariza, Odom, and Brown is still in limbo... so Any of these could potentially have a bigger role than they may think they will have.. *cough Sasha Cough*

I think Drew and Sasha should use the off-season to re-focus on becoming the 'different makers' players, that they have shown, the ability to be. Because if they do good in the regular season, the confidence will result in a direct positive correlation with the postseason..

I think confidence is the biggest detterant when it comes to Bynum.. so he should work on realizing how impactful he has been in the not so distant past...

I disagreee that Sasha needs rest. He plays 5-10 minutes every other day, he can't be that tired...

If hes not being effective as a Laker.. he should be working on changing that..

Not being concerned with playing for a different team.

It was more than a lid over the hoop, cause half the time he wasn't even hitting the rim!!! Nothing worse than a three point "specialist" throwing up bricks that have NO CHANCE of going in.

Also, some shots were in the flow of the offense, but many were not. As soon as he touched the ball, he would chuck it. He knew he wasn't going to get that many minutes, so he wanted to get his shots off - and his bricks led to instant offense for the opposing team. Then, he would try to make up for it on defense by being overly aggressive - and picking up fouls. It was a bad cycle.

Obviously, we have all seen that he can perform much better than he did this post season, and for most of the regular season. He needs to work on his game, and find his shot. I don't know if that is by working with Hodges or another shooting coach, getting a different opportunity to play with a national team or what.... But, the machine needs some serious maintenance.

That's his job, that's why they pass him the ball, he's not supposed to do anything else with it except open fire, That's why he parks himself on the perimeter and waits, that's were Phil wants him to be, not slashing through the paint or trying to facillitate the offense. Just wait for the ball and "bombs away"

Sasha, good he's going...he'll get more shots on that team..maybe get back to the Machine days.

Bynum, good decision as welll. He has rehab left and hopefully he can strengthen his knee and trust it more and get that explosiveness back.

Sasha needs to play, and play a lot. he won't get out of his slump until he keeps playing and playing more.

good for him, he needs to play, and play for 40 minutes a game.

of course the ball is expected to go to him and the other 4 lakers when on the floor, the difference was he was chucking it.
