Well, if we are not going to keep Ariza, at least we can have Ron. Not overly happy like most of you. I was really hoping Ariza would be retained bc of his ability to play without the ball. He impact the game on both ends without really needing the ball in his hands. Artest however needs the ball in his hands on offense to be in his comfort zone and takes many ill advised jumpers. Artest has been vocal in the past in wanting more touches and wanting bigger roles on teams. I just hope he truly understands that he is going to not get as many shots and not let this affect him or the team. But he is the superior man defender. Much stronger. And is a guy who can take on the Melos, Lebrons and Pierces of the NBA. In the end though, winning cures all complaints. He just really needs to keep his head in check and I am confident that Phil, Fish and Kobe will be able to do that. Welcome Ron, we all embrace you

I like this deal a lot.

I'd rather pay Artest MLE than pay Ariza anything more than MLE.

Ariza was fantastic and a great roleplayer...He was asking for too much though. You can argue that if we had Artest we wouldn't need 2 big steals...we were leading both times anyway I believe.

Artest is a much superior overall player and his on-ball defense will really help this team.

Did we just go from one of the softest to one of the toughest teams in 1 year? wowza...

while I believe that Artest's defense is over rated, I do believe he brings a certain intensity and perhaps intimidation.

he is a very good value at $6m per.

he is an upgrade over Ariza as long as he does not jack ill-advised 3s late in the game.

This is my biggest concern. Not just in the late game situation. But overall on offense. He does like to handle the rock and take long jumpers at times. There is such a thing called too much talent on offense. But on the switch, he will command more attention on offense opening up the others

I LOVE this move. yes I would have rather kept Ariza because of age, mentality, and we KNOW that he fits but we weren't gonna keep him at the price he is asking so WELCOME Ron. Artest adds a lot of good things to this team, he was a 40% shooter from three last with most being contested (he will have much better looks here), still a great tough defender who will not get pushed around, can play in the post, and only comes for 6 mil/yr for a three year span.

This also means Phil is staying for sure.

Cant wait for next season

I've followed Ron Artest since his days in Indy (because my cousin's a Pacer fan). Like Lamar Odom, Artest is a player you eventually become emotionally invested in. Can't help but like him when he's on your team, even with all of his faults.

Mitch the Magician!

A few years ago, remember all the talk about trading for a big man to complement Kobe (JO etc.), but it would have cost LO AND Bynum.

Mitch pulls of the trade for Pau while keeping everyone that mattered.

The last few years, all the talk about swapping LO for Artest, now Mitch gets him for the MLE, again keeping all of our pieces.

Amazing.

I hope Ron Artest will work out. Lets hope Kobe and Phil Jackson keep him in line. If he plays his role and does not go crazy, he could be a good fit for the Lakers. And they got him cheaper than I thought they would.

Since Lamar Odom and Ron Artest are longtime friends back to their younger days does this deal seal Lamar Odom re singing with the lakers?

While I am sad to see Trevor go, it was ultimately his decision and he chose to not take the MLE offer. I would much rather have Ron at the MLE then pay trevor 7-8mil. Additionally, Ron is a much better on the ball defender and should prove valuable against, RJ, LB, PP, should we face any of them in the playoffs.

Further, I agree with some people's concern about his shot taking decisions, but he tends to make those poor decisions mostly when he is the main option. When he played with TMac and Yao he played with himself and the system. When TMac went down he opened up a little but not too bad. He really started chucking after Yao went down. He will be the 3rd or 4th option at any given time with the Lakers.
