Ariza Trevor Ariza has made a verbal commitment to sign with the Houston Rockets, according to sources close to the process.
The 6-foot-8 Ariza averaged 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists for the Lakers last season, which ended with the NBA championship.
With at least five teams pursuing Ariza, the Lakers appeared unwilling to pay him more than the $5.6 million mid-level exception. Marc Stein is a senior NBA writer for ESPN.com.
ah, breaks my heart a little. probably my second favorite player in the league right now. THANK YOU TREVOR!!!! i said in the NBA forum and I'll say here, quietly one of the biggest steals (Cooky and Mo Evans) in recent years. You brought a special presence to the squad this year and were a big part of our championship. Best of luck TREV, I'll be rooting for you next year.
The Rockets are capped out so they could only offer the MLE.
Maybe it's for more years though, still.
What a boneheaded move.
A guy from Socal and UCLA could have started alongside Kobe Bryant on teams which would be championship contenders for years, takes the same money from a team that just found out their superstar center may be done for his career, oh and another (TMAC), who can't stay healthy and looks to be on the block.
And what happened to the Cavs offer?
Nice job by David Lee screwing up his player's dream, but Trev, ultimately, it's your responsibility and loss.
He's only getting from Houston what LA offered though - $33mil over 5 years ($6.6 pa).
I'm not sure how much of his decision to leave was due to him cracking the sads over our offer, or the realisation that the Lakers preferred Artest, so I won't rip into Ariza. If his reason is the former however, he's made a grave error. As Robster pointed out, the grass aint greener on the other side. I'm thinking his decision must have been more to do with being shoved out the door. The Lakers simply do not lose players we want to keep. From memory, AC Green leaving in the 90s is the only time its happened.
David Lee really screwed his client and got in his head. ****ing agents! Trevor Ariza is not a good fit for the Rockets. Hes going to have huge expectations on him given hes basicilly a swap for Artest. What an idiot for leaving the perfect situation. He got very poor advice from his agent.
