Default Center is the most watered down position in the NBA

1. Howard

Outside of Howard who is a top five player you have two guys that are injury prone behind him but talented none the less:

2. Yao

3. Jefferson

Then there is a huge drop off where Shaq is arguably the next best after that and he isn't even a top 50 player any more...

4. Shaq

5. ??????

Give some respect to the team that beat the Magic. Gasol did quite well at center when they did the Odom/Gasol PF/C duo. He's right up there. Not quite the athletic force of Howard but he is a legit 7 footer with all sorts of post skills.

Gasol is a PF.. no way around it... He is really good though and if he was a center then he probably would be third on this list...

Future doesn't look too bright... Lopez and Oden might be able to change that though...

1 great center and a bunch of stiffs.. Yao as great as he was never struck me as dominant.. Al Jefferson and Yao are not great defenders (Yao is one of the best man to man defenders because of his height) but they are not good at anything else defensively... I would rather a guy get 20 pts and 15 rebounds every night and take away 15-20 pts from a team then a guy who gets 25 and 10 and doesn't change the game on the defensive end...

Wait, did you just say Shaq isn't even a top 50 current NBA player anymore or do you mean top 50 all-time?

When is the last time the best center in the association was actually a 6'9 power forward?

Perhaps back to the pre-Mikan years. For it is primarily due to the guard favored rule alterations for much of this era, also cutting Shaquille O'Neal's prime drastically short in an unjust fashion. Thou modern contemporaries always obsessed with the Jordan, Bryant, McGrady, James, Iverson, and Carter types. Where be this obsession with the likes of Chamberlain, O'Neal, Jabbar, Duncan, Russell, Olajuwon, and Ewing?

I can't believe this at first thought, could you please name off 49 better players than Shaq? I would at least thought he would be in the 40s. I mean grant it, the guy isn't what he was, but he's still a 18/9 center, which is arguably near the top 5 for centers alone with only 30 minutes of play.

Yes I can but it would take to long.. come on man Almost every team has 2-3 players better then Shaq.. some have four like Orlando, and Boston, and soon LA once Bynum comes up.. Thats just off the top of my head...

I'll attempt too, I'll even put players who you can argue or better than Shaq or worse than Shaq in that list ahead of him to see how it turns out...

Really? I can't really remember where I heard it from (I think it was JVG who said it) but apparently Yao is a far better team defender than a man defender. Because of his hugeness, it intimidates people from driving into the paint, especially those who avoid contact. Anyway, there are hardly any defensive centers left in the NBA. Even Howard gets called out for his man defence, and is praised far more for his weak side defence.
