Default Lakers considering Shelden Williams as insurance

http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archiv...lden_williams/

Because they are already over the salary cap, the Lakers have few options available to them if they don't re-sign Lamar Odom.

They can sign a veteran forward for about $1 million. They also must decide by Aug. 1 whether to bring back seldom-used guard Sun Yue for $736,000 next season. The Lakers have also considered forward Shelden Williams.

Im confused with this.. If they are indeed looking to get Selden.. could they not have him and LO also??? Im saying at that price..

Shoot it has been reported that Sun Yue is showing little interest in staying with the Lakers, and more with helping his China squad... his cash can contribute to paying Williams the min...

i doubt it..he'd come cheap. if they were really interested they would have signed him by now, maybe once the odom dust settles one way or the other they'll look at the far end of the roster and tweek it a bit, but i would think there's better talent for the money out there

I thought I read an article that said Kupchak only wanted 13 players when the season started. Another reason why most people think Sun Yue will eventually be cut.

I think it is time to cut Sun too. Let's face it, PG's don't typically take that long to develop like a C does. It's not like he was dominating the D league. I don't see him being a productive NBA player.

lol Sun Yue has only been in the league one year, played like only 6-8 games during the season, came off an ankle injury, on a deeeeep team with a coach that rarely puts rookies in. give the dude a break. im not saying hes going to be an all-star but i believe Sun Yue deserves a chance to develop into a good player....

I probably am being a bit harsh but how many D-League guards develop into starting players or even really good producers off the bench? Guards are so easy to come by in the draft and they are more ready that what Sun looks right now that it seems like it would be smarter just to save the money and draft someone next year if needed.

haha i understand what you are saying....but sun was a long-term project even before he signed with the lakers. I think its ll in schedule for the lakers... Derek Fisher is about to retire soon and its time to see whether farmar will step up and be able to handle that starting spot. and i always thought the least sun could be is a decent bench player.

Shelden's face is waaaay too small for his head. Also he's banging Anthony Parker of the Cavs so there could be a conflict of interest if we meet in the finals.

still, he's better than DJ.

I'd take Ike Diogu over Shelden. Diogu is pretty good, just hasn't gotten the chance to get regular minutes on a team.

Ike is more of a project than an actual role player.

We know what we can get out of shelden. We just want him to come off the bench to help with the boards, play D, and if he can get a couple pick n rolls with Kobe, then he needs to catch and dunk.

Shelden would be a solid pickup. He can play both the 4 and 5.
I would be surprised, though, if we signed another player (beyond Odom) since mgmt likes to keep an open roster spot just in case something comes up at mid-season trade deadline.

We could have had free space to add someone else had they not kept Josh Powell. Powell was really solid through the first half of the season. Then he wanted to score lol.

They probably kept all these guys (and will probably keep sun yue) because of the amount of players getting paid big bucks on the team already. Basically the best talent for the minimum is what they're going for right now.

These FA's are not bad players, but why settle on them when the likes of Drew Gooden and Joe Smith are available? 24 days since July 1st, the first days of FA negotiations and no other team has signed them. I know 1 Mil is not much but the prospect of getting a ring can really increase their stock next year.
