Default successful offseason!

With LO finally making up his mind to return to LA, Lakerdom can take a huge sigh of relief and put our hands together for Mitch and Co. in the front office

Much like last year when our top priority was keeping our own,Turiaf and Sasha, this year was no different. We wanted to Keep Ariza, LO, and Shannon Brown. In the end the Lakers called Arizas bluff and landed Artest. Shannon Brown quitely signed his two year deal, and LO finally decided to do what made the most sense....Get paid top dollar AND stay with the Lakers.

OUT:
Ariza

IN:
Artest

RESIGNED/RETAINED/OPTION PICKED UP:
Shanon Brown
Lamar Odom
DJ Mbenga
Josh Powell

TO BE DETERMINED:
Sun Yue

In my mind this offeseason was a huge success. I'm still scratching my head on how Ariza blew his best opportunity to be successfull and make the most money, but at the end of the day swaping out Ariza for Artest should work just fine.

I've been a big Artest basher, but I'm keeping the faith that he's that kind of guy that you love to hate.....unless he's on your team. He's in the best position of his career as far as winning goes, so I'm cautiously optomistic that he can fit in with the program. One thing I will say about him that makes me hopeful is that he is actually a very under rated passer. With all the tools around him, he can be dangerous.

I cant wait to get the season started!

I doubt Sun Yue stays. I heard on 710 ESPN radio from John Ireland that he doesn't think the Lakers will keep him. Mitch Kupchak thinks highly of Sun but there's just no place in the rotation for him to play. Plus I think he's go to play for the Chinese National Team.

There is no way that Sasha should get playing time over Morrison, considering Sasha's struggles ALL season long last year and Adam's success in the summer league. The Machine can only do one thing and that's shoot, there is no reason for us to cut Adam's minutes so Sasha can play. The dude can ball, he was a top college player. We definitely need to give him some PT this upcoming season behind Artest & Kobe. I say 5-6 minutes. He should not be in street clothes all season long because of Sasha.

Sasha plays SG and Morrison plays SF. I don't see their roles affecting each other's playing time. If someone needs to sit more it would have to be Luke so Morrison could play more.

I don't really think it matters. Adam is a spot up shooter that plays in a triangle. Luke could play SG too but he isn't as good of a shooter as Adam (could be).

I don't think I remember seeing Luke play SG though in the last 3 seasons at least. I have seen him play mostly SF and a little bit of PF with some of our smaller quicker lineups.

I think Adam may be kind of big for the SG position but as you kind of mentioned, Adam is a spot-up shooter like Sasha so that could change this season (Luke can't shoot anymore after his contract year). The thing with Adam is we really did not see much of anything from him last season in his very limited minutes, and Sasha did very little in his fairly high number of minutes for a 9th man near the end of the bench. I can definitely foresee a switch in their minute averages. Sasha got the benefit of the doubt last year so perhaps Phil might instead decide to give the benefit of the doubt to Adam this year to see if he can provide more with extended minutes than the little Sasha provided with his playing-time. Plus, Adam has learned the system a lot better over the summer.

^agreed about adam being too big for the two spot. it would have to be against lineups with really bad shooting guards

plus it's only been summer league. we'll see how things pan out. i know phil likes proven (relatively in sasha's case) commodities.

don't fall in love with morrison, two reasons he sucks, he can't play on the NBA level and the second is i'll bet he's gone by training camp, his salary is of the size they'll want to move him out...

He had a poor rookie season but he had a major injury in his sophmore season that limited his progress. I think it's a little to early to conclude that he sucks in the NBA. If JJ Reddick can be productive at making open shots for Orlando, I don't see why Adam couldn't do the same for us especially with the fire power we have on this team commanding constant double/triple teams.

I didn't say Luke can play the two, I said he doesn't play the two because the guy can't shoot. Otherwise I'm sure Phil would put him at the two spot occasionally; Adam can shoot the ball, I'm not giving up on him just yet. Yeah his defense is atrocious so we'll need to have Artest/Shannon/Odom on the court with him or some defensive prowess.

I don't see what makes Sasha that much better, he had a worse season then any season Adam had in this league last year with Kobe & Pau giving him open looks time and time again.

I hate it when guys think basketball is only about offense.....so what if a guy scores 12 points if he gives up 24 at the other end.....how is that helping your team. If you think Morrison can play respectable defense at the NBA level you are sadly wrong. Sasha at least can stir things up on defense....despite some lapses...and slow his guy down.....Morrison....NO!

Morrison High 3pt% 34% Sasha last year 36%
FG% 36%.....................Sasha 39%
FT% 76%......................Sasha 92%

Morrison's career highs for steals, blocked shots, rebounding, steals are lower than Sasha despite Morrison averaging 29 minutes played first season to Sasha 17 mpg high. Sasha's assist to turnover ratio is also much better.
I'm in no way saying that Sasha is great....but Morrison is not better in any way. If you want to say they both suck, you'll get no argument from me.

Summer League stats are the most meaningless in all of the sports world.

I think summer league stats aren't necessarily meaningless. It shows who's ready for the next level. Griffin put up good stats and so did Anthony Randolph. Something tells me they are going to have good seasons. Summer league stats mean a lot because it can make or break a guy even making the team. Look at Memphis. They picked up Marcus Williams and he will end up getting a contract because of his summer league performance. He's a guy who could give them solid minutes and be a rotation player now. Morrison did well this year. There were things he did that can potentially translate into the professional game. He is definitely a specialist. He was in college so I don't see why the NBA would be much different. I do think anybody can play defense though. They just need the will to do it.

The guy has been injured. Cut him some slack. I keep seeing people ripping on Bynum in the playoffs and Morrison last season and it doesn't make sense to me to evaluate a player while they are injured. I don't know how many of you have been injured playing basketball but for those who have, you know how difficult it is to get back to where you were before. Professional basketball players aren't superhumans. They need time to heal too. Let's see what Morrison can do when he comes into the season healthy. If he sucks then it's fair to rip on him (whether he is on the Lakers or not).

?????? You think ANYBODY can play defense
That's big news to me.....so with the right training Sasha could D-up Lebron??? Wow....really? If only things were that simple....trust me it's not like anyone wants to give up a game winning basket. I could drag this on to a tutorial of basketball defense for you but don't have the time....I'm a defense first coach with well over 20 years experience.
I will cut Morrison some slack and give him a chance....but I'm not giving him a ounce of credit in advance for anything.
Dude, you are impressed that Marcus Williams made Memphis......really?
Memphis? Because they are such a tough team to make? because their front office would never made a bad decision like......give away an All-Star Player who helps the greatest team in the NBA win it's 15th Championship.....oh I see...gotcha
