Why is he cheap because he never goes into the Luxary tax? He would rather have ashare of the Luxary tax proceeds than pay into it. At this point The Clippers are very financially sound while other teams are on the brink of bankruptcy. everybody calls him cheap because he nevr signed any of the horrible players that Baylor picked. I call it smart investing by not over investing.

  • Sam Cassell 2yrs/13M

Prior to that, the largest signing was Eric Piatkowski at 5yrs/15M! Do your homework.

sterling owns the clippers to make money...hes not going to ever become one of those owners trying to spend to win. he wants to make money first...that will never change. (and looking at that list he was probably better off not spending at all...ouch those contracts hurt to look at!)

do clip fans really need to be convinced that sterling is cheap?

i love the spin though...financially sound...smart investing...did you attend one of his seminars?

Wait, wait, wait. You just said he's cheap, and now, your saying he shouldn't even have spent money?

Make up your damn mind.

Sterling was cheap but now I think he's upgraded to merely being prudent - same as most Front Offices in the L (at least the 2nd teir franchises).

He's not going to swing a deal and go into luxury but I think he's been trying to keep competitive within reason.

This is a good trade for the Clippers, in any event.

Get a solid roleplayer who can stick the 3 and play some D for what is, essentially, nothing - a 2nd round pick in 2016 that is likely so highly protected it won't even be exchanged.

Looks like a fair trade between these two teams.

huh? i said hes cheap and most of contracts that he has spent on look stupid now.

pretty sure i never said his payroll is $0.00. even the cheapest nba owners must spend millions...there are rules for this.

so not only is he cheap but i guess hes a bad evaluator of talent (or hes paying the wrong guys to give him advice).

hes a cheap owner guys...everyone knows it. im not making this up nor is this shocking news.

http://*********.com/salaries.htm - they had the 7th lowest payroll and a few of the teams below them were going for cap space (detroit, portland, toronto) and spent big money this summer. being cheap is all relative.

this cant help either: http://www.thestreet.com/story/10551...ml?puc=_tscrss

2nd in voting for worst owner in all of sports with 22%.

Owner Donald Sterling is notoriously cheap, though, so it is probably safe to assume he would like to shed salary

1. The Los Angeles Clippers: Unlike a lot of the owners in professional sports, including his contemporary in L.A., Jerry Buss, Donald Sterling is as frugal an owner as there is in all of professional sports. His staunch refusal to pay players prime dough has resulted in his franchise being a perpetual member of the draft lottery. Only once in the last ten years, 2006, have the Clips not been an invited guest of the league in New York City, the second week of May. ..... Leave it to Donald Sterling to be so cheap as to not only not pay his players, but to also agree to share an arena, Staples Center, with the bigger drawing L.A. Lakers who are probably going back to the Finals this year. Sterling is like Al Davis, he wants to "Just Win Baby", but just like all the other teams on this list he doesn't want to do what's necessary, both on and off the field to help his team be a success.

8. Donald Sterling -- L.A. Clippers (56 letters)
The worst owner in sports is undoubtedly Donald Sterling.

The Clippers are a long-running joke (it's no coincidence their biggest fan is a comedian). When Sterling let Larry Brown go, he demonstrated he did not care about winning. Also, how could you put Elgin Baylor in charge of your draft with his track record? He was a great player, but as an executive he needs to be given the golden watch. Of course, the gold market would promptly collapse.

Anyway, Donald is your man.

Apparently never heard the Vince Lombardi saying: Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing. No one has ever let so much talent slip through their hands in the name of frugality.

or the first time in recorded history, someone actually chose Donald Sterling and the frugal Clippers.

sterling throws a few contracts to players to get his payroll up into the bottom 20% of the league and now hes a "spender". lets see what he does when camby is a free agent and when he has to pony up for thorton, gordon, jordan, etc...right now the only deals he has that arent rookie deals (aka nice and cheap for a few years) past this season are davis and kaman (ironically enough both not so nice deals for LA).

edit: maybe i gave them too much credit...http://content.usatoday.com/sports/b...terstitialskip - this salary list has them 4th from the bottom for 2008-09.

this one: http://thehoopdoctors.com/online2/20...team-payrolls/ has them 5th from the bottom. lots of differing numbers around but im sure the truth is somewhere in that 4-7 region.

Wow, talk about a steal for the Clippers. I can't believe the Hornets agreed to that.

The Clippers are actually pretty stacked on paper.

I think they'll make the playoffs if everyone stays healthy.

Of course, this is the Clips we're talking about.
