He took control of the evening, plain and simple.
Whether he used Bush as an escape goat (which he did but he was right and it was only in a few instances, not an entire speech where he did that) or when he tried to unite everybody and asked everybody to move forward. He asked people not to be afraid and reminded them that Americans have 'character' and won't run away if things are hard.
Like I mentioned.... people can disagree on what he was saying, but there's no denying that he took control of that room and we will see the poll numbers jump. And before people reply with "Americans are stupid" (which I agree with), these same people were unsure about him and this health care situation so a rise on the polls IS showing leadership.
He's reassuring them at a time when there's none.
