Friday's cuts amounted to freebies. The next one for the Charlotte Bobcats will get a little expensive.
The Bobcats shortened their preseason roster Friday by waiving Will Conroy and Donta Smith. Both were on make-good contracts, so they were long shots to make the team.
Of the two, Conroy probably had a better chance, since he's a point guard and showed some promise during training camp.
However, he committed two turnovers in less than seven minutes Thursday against Indiana, and coach Bernie Bickerstaff had wing player Bernard Robinson play point late in the game.
The Bobcats will make one more cut before the regular season, and that would likely involve a player with at least a partially guaranteed contract. That decision could come down to keeping full-time third point guard (Kevin Burleson) or trusting Robinson to fill in occasionally.
Oh Master Moderator.....................you will let us know as soon as the report comes out about who will be our firm 15-man roster for the season.............. I noticed, and it struck me as odd, that after the Cats cut Donta and Conroy and it seemed as if we were down to 16 players, along comes C. Alexander listed at the top of the roster. Cory Alexander-- is that right? So now the roster is up to 17?????????
Cory is more than likely on an unguaranteed contract so unless he played at hall-of-fame level, he won't make the cut. The Cats had 16 guys under contract, which means one will get cut and more than likely sent to the D-League. It's basically down to Burleson and Robinson. I'll post something when I find out.
