Default Who thinks Paul Pierce will be traded this summer?

Damn. He's a top 10 player, he's 29 years of age, and his team is in a youth movement.

The top ten part is certainly arguable, but Pierce is a stud. Boston seems content with keeping him with the youth, though. Kind of sucks for him.

They should trade him before he gets old and leaves them for a contender a la Gary Payton, Michael Finley...

Yeah it does suck for him. Paul Pierce bleeds Celtic Green, and he takes it seriously. The youth around him is gonna be potent, but they not gonna contend for any titles right now, and by the time they do, Paul Pierce will be in his mid to late 30's.

Antoine Walker's trying his best to destroy our team from the outside now...

http://www.boston.com/sports/basketb...n+Celtics+news

Quote:
MIAMI -- Antoine Walker invited Paul Pierce to American Airlines Arena for the first round of the 2006 playoffs, following through on an offer he made during some regular-season trash talk. But the Heat's run to the NBA Finals has left Walker little time to talk to his friend and former teammate. It has been about two weeks since they last spoke, and Walker doesn't expect Pierce in town for Games 4 or 5. Walker, however, will certainly have plenty to tell Pierce once his offseason begins.

When asked what advice he might give Pierce, Walker said, ``It's hard to say. He's already made a lot of money, but he has an opportunity now to sign an extension. He has to sit down with Danny [ Ainge] and the owners and really see where they want to go, if he wants to be part of a rebuilding process. If he wants to get to this level [and play for a title], he may have to move on. I don't know if he can be that patient.

``To get to this level, you've got to be deep. Look at both our teams. We're very deep teams. You've got to be talented. I don't believe [Pierce] has that other piece yet. You can't just do it by yourself. When you think of Boston, you just think of Paul Pierce solo."

As right as Walker is... and he is right, there's a way to do things, and putting it out in the open that Paul should seek to be traded or leave the Celtics isn't the way. That should be between Paul and him. Further, Paul is grown enough to decide what is best for himself and Antoine doesn't even need to "counsel" him.

Its a damn shame that his name always gets dragged through the dirt! I think he is probably most underrated star player in the NBA. To make things worse most of this stuff comes from the Celtics brass, who claims to be old-school, respectful and loyal to their star players. Man is in his prime and Celts would be crazy to trade him - they could never get enough value in return. However, if they want to rebuild (once again?!), well, OK...

If he doesn't like it then he can just go ahead and not sign his extension this summer or exercise his final year's player option. Anyhow, he seemed to be enjoying himself last season. Paul Pierce is a grown man, quite capable of deciding what he does and does not want to do with his career.

GP was, in fact, traded before he "got old" but he was dealt for a great, younger player (Ray Allen). If the deal that moves P brings us a younger player of Ray Allen's caliber, I wouldn't argue with it. Michael Finley is actually a completely different case. The Mavs could still have him right now but Cuban decided it was too important to save money, so he was waived under the luxury tax amnesty clause (or whatever it's called). And that had more to do with his contract being bigger than his contribution. Right now, Paul Pierce is well-worth his deal to the Celtics. And for most of his time in Dallas, Fin was also worth it, providing leadership, toughness, some clutch play, and around 20 points a night.

What are you talking about? The Celtic front office has never publicly said anything bad about P. They were probably mad at him privately after last year's bad behaviour in Game 6 vs. Indy but publicly they still defended him.

What i meant was that they were the faces of their teams for a long time, gave all for them, but had to be in another teams to have an opportunity to win it all.

GP made the Finals in Seattle, and Finley has gotten no closer as a Spur than he did as a Mav. In fact, if he was still a Mav this year he'd probably be in the Finals right now.

If I were running the Celtics, I'd face the fact that the team cannot contend for a title in the next 3-5 years the way things are going. Maybe there will be a one or two year window when Green and Jefferson hit their prime and Pierce is not yet too old, but that's being really optimistic. We're talking about a team that has already been in the lottery for two years, and will probably stay there a while longer.

A trade with the Bulls for #2 might be the best answer for them. How much cap space will the Bulls have to absorb salary? Without knowing that, it's hard to name a specific deal, but a possibility might be:

Pierce + LaFrentz for Duhon + Harrington + #2

New lineups might be:

Duhon
Szczerbiak/Green
Morrison
Jefferson/#7
Perkins

That's a team with some players that are lovable enough for Boston to show support to during their awful next two years, and they get the added bonus of a great ticket for the Oden lottery.

Bulls could be

Hinrich
Pierce/Gordon
Noccioni/Deng
Chandler/#16
LaFrentz

Or... the Celtics could continue to be a lottery team with Pierce, and maybe he'll play a mentoring role to the young guys. Who knows.

Morrison in the celtics? That's must be one of Stern's dreams. I'd like to see that.
