Ive never done any real formal training before though. I like jumping alot and i do toe raises.
Will I be able to dunk if I train intensely? Give me your honest opinions.
=)
Possible, but it will take a lot of work. I mean a lot, because you'll have to improve your vert by about 8 inches. I'm about 5'8.5" and could grab the rim on a good day at your age. I spent an entire summer dedicated to improving my vert to dunk. I'm talking about 10 hours a week just working on my legs and core alone. By the end of the summer I completed 2 dunks (barely).... out of about 300 or so attempts. One thing that will likely be challenging is simply keeping the ball in your hand. Since you are about the same size as me, I'm assuming your hands are a similar size. Going up with 2 hands just reduces how much reach you have, and going up with 1 hand means the ball is just going to fly away from you due to the momentum and the lack of being able to firmly grasp a ball with 1 hand. That is the real reason it took me 300 attempts, because the timing had to be just perfect with when the ball was about to pop out of my hand.
Re: I barely scraped rim for the first time in my life.
yeah it's possible.
One method i thought was neat was using an adjustable hoop and practicing the actual flush on 8.5, 9, 9.5, ect, all the way up to 10. Combine that with all the calf exercises. It'll take months but i bet if you are dedicated you can make it happen.
Re: I barely scraped rim for the first time in my life.
in a pickup game maybe dunking can give you some kind of fun or release but overall dunking is useless for league games. granted i cant dunk nor can anyone in my league can so its more wise to save your stamina and energy for defense.
Re: I barely scraped rim for the first time in my life.
i'm not going to lie... for about 2 months this summer a friend of mine ran this play where he would fall to the ground onto his hands and i would drive the lane and dunk off his back...
people would go so pissed at the ****, like they would say the points didn't count and everything

The points don't count because it is a violation, since it falls under the "Illegal Assist in Scoring" rule.
Re: I barely scraped rim for the first time in my life.
I trained really really hard so I could dunk (@ 6' 170lb) and for about a month or 2 I had it going, but I found dunking to be really useless in most situations. 1 I cannot dunk overpoweringly, 2 I couldn't exactly posterize anyone and maintaining balance in the air after contact is more important to finish a layup or a dunk anyway.
I did find increasing my vert useful in, tipoffs, offensive rebounds and putbacks, blocking shots, and just making plays at the rim or above the rim level not including dunking
Re: I barely scraped rim for the first time in my life.
Well the odds are against you because your reach is so short... you would have to have a running vert of 41 just to put it in... and really unless you have real good grip on the ball it needs to be more than that because you just don't jump as high when you can't palm it cleanly... It's weird. If you can't palm, then an oop would be a better possibility.
I would recommend the VJB to help increase your vert. I have put on nearly 4 inches in a little over 6 weeks of training. If you had the same results, you would be at 38" running right now and grabbing the rim solidly. I think if you already have a 34" without any real training, then you have a decent chance of getting there actually. I would give it a shot if it's something you want to do. A 5'8 guy dunking would really open some eyes and it sure would be fun to be flying through the air.
Re: I barely scraped rim for the first time in my life.
Disregard the discouragement, homie.
The above don't know what the f*ck they're talking about. Your improvement is remarkable, and all you need is half a foot. As you've stated you haven't done any formal training.. so u haven't even come close to maximizin yo results.
Time to up the ante. And that means some iron. Your CNS should be well-developed from jumping so much, so now its time to amplify the force per each jump. Mr. Squat and Monseiur Deadlift just called and they want to fire your azz up. Literally. Invest in a training regimen that composes a good mix of a Back Squat, Deadlift or Romanian Deadlift, Snatch, Clean and Press, with complimentary Bulgarian Split-Squats and Glute Ham Raises. With adequate rest for recovery, claro que si. A bit of upper body muscle on the side won't hurt.. and prior to your upper body days I think it'd be advantageous to practice some vertical jumps, sprints to warm your body up.
Keep moving and if need be investin some Meditacion/Yoga. Stretch the f*ck outta your hamstrings, hip flexors, and quads slowly but surely and focus on smoothly transferring force through the ankle, knee, and hip joints like a damn kangaroo.
YOu got it in you bud. 2 Decades in age done passed but a half-decade of dunking awaits.
Re: I barely scraped rim for the first time in my life.
20 and 5'8? I don't think so. but don't let this discourage you. Also, jumping with a ball and jumping without one is two completely different things (way harder to jump with a ball).
But I think a lot of kids on this site that are playing ball for the first time or are still learning the game should realize that dunking isn't really important, except that it looks cool. Remember a lay up is worth the same amount of points.
