Where has Carson Palmer repositioned himself among the elite QB's in the game?
Following the 2005 season, a season in which saw the Bengals win their division, people put him up there as one of THE top young QB's in the game. Then came the injury in the playoff game vs. the Steelers. The following 2 seasons weren't bad, but he was clearly a guy who was trying to get healthy, and the team success wasn't there. 2008 was a lost season due to another injury. Now, the team is 6-2, he's won big time games in the clutch. He's also being a much more versatile QB than we imagine, making plays with his legs. Never knew he had that sort of mobility.
When you rank the top QB's, obviously you got Peyton Manning/Brady at the top. Then following him are guys like Drew Brees, Big Ben, Phillip Rivers, etc. Where does Carson Palmer rank these days? Surely top 10, I think.

Peyton, Brady, Brees............................................. .................................................. .................................................. .....................................Roethlisberge r, McNabb, Warner, Rivers, Rodgers, Favre (in the first half of each season)..... Schaub, Eli, Romo, Palmer..
Only Peyton, Brady, Brees are in order.. 1a, 1b, 1bb. The rest of the QBs are just tiered...

I've never swayed when it came to Carson Palmer. After Tom Brady/Peyton Manning? He is the 3rd best QB in the NFL. Always felt that way. And I dont take much away from him during the past 2 seasons. So I weighed/valued his actual QB skills more which is why he ranks so high. When you think about it? As a QB what cant Carson do? Really cant think of anything.

I don't know what Brees has done that Ben hasn't shown he can do - and on the other hand, Ben has shown things that Brees hasn't shown yet - so I don't see the whole clear cut thing.
As far as Palmer goes, he's on the outside of the Peyton/Brady level, obviously, and he's also outside the Brees, Roethlisberger & Rivers group as well.
I'd put him in the Manning & Rodgers group. The guy is putting up solid numbers, and his play has been solid which reflect those stats, but it's just that... solid. Not great. Not all-world.

You can say the same thing about many quarterbacks. What can't Jay Cutler do? What can't Rodgers do? What can't Roehtlisberger do? What can't Eli do?
It comes down to how well you perform, not what you potentially can do with your skill set. Peyton can't run worth a lick, but he's the best quarterback playing right now. He can't do some of the things that Roethlisberger can do, or a Rodgers, but he performs better than them - that's what it comes down to.

just some food for thought

Romo ended up with a very quiet 307 yards passing in the face of HEAVY, HEAVY pressure. The Eagles D has only allowed one other 300 yard passer so far this season...Drew Brees. Prior to that, you'd have to go all the way back to week 2 of last season before you find another QB who threw for 300 yards on this D and it was Romo in that wild MNF game. Let that sink in for a sec.
"[Tony Romo] climbed onto the "official" NFL leaderboards in several categories. With his 29 attempts Sunday, Romo has now attempted 1,501 passes in his career – the NFL requires a minimum 1,500 attempts to quality for its official records.
So Romo enters the record books today in some very, very lofty company.
His career passer rating of 94.7 (also his rating this year) is third all time. Here's the top five in career passer rating:
- Steve Young – 96.8
- Peyton Manning – 95.4
- Tony Romo – 94.7
- Kurt Warner – 93.5
- Tom Brady – 93.4
Now look at the top five in career passing yards per attempt:
- Otto Graham – 8.63
- Sid Luckman – 8.42
- Norm Van Brocklin – 8.16
- Tony Romo – 8.14
- Steve Young – 7.98
Tony Romo is not only in the top five all time, he's the most prolific passer since Norm Van Brocklin retired at the end of the 1960 season. He's also one of just two players who appears on both lists, with Steve Young. This indicates that he's produced the highly efficient rating indicative of the modern game, with the very high average per attempt more common in earlier years of NFL football, before the "ball-control" style passing game became all the rage."
Re: Where has Carson Palmer repositioned himself among the elite QB's in the game?
Food for what thought? There is no thought when you mention the elite quarterbacks and how Romo fits in that discussion.
He doesn't belong.
Until he consistently shows up late in the year, you can't put him anywhere near the top quarterbacks. If he can win a playoff game and play well in it, or come up big in a game near the end of the regular season where a playoff seed or spot is on the line, then he can gradually begin to climb up the rankings....but he needs to prove that his troubles playing well late in the year are a non-factor, and that will take time.
Re: Where has Carson Palmer repositioned himself among the elite QB's in the game?
There is one big difference between Romo & Early Manning - Mannign didn't dog it in the big regular season games late in the year, and he actually won playoff games. He had three playoff games with ratings over 135 before he ever won a superbowl, and the year before the Colts won a superbowl he played very well against a great Pitt defense, but our offensive line let us down.
Romo has two total playoff games under his belt, right? And hasn't won a single game yet! He fumbled the snap against Seattle, and played like dog against the Giants.
Peyton was much more accomplished pre-superbowl in the post-season/big games than Romo is. So don't go there making that comparison.
Re: Where has Carson Palmer repositioned himself among the elite QB's in the game?
Yes, I'm a Bengals fan... so I'm biased.... but logically and realistically speaking when you you look at the "overall" Carson Palmer "package" he is Top 3 ... you ask any GM... head coach... etc... if you have a 100% healthy Carson Palmer you CAN NOT rank him less than # 3 behind Peyton and Brady.
