Default The Eastern Conference is quietly being bad again...

1. Only 4 teams that currently own winning records.

2. The Atlantic Division will probably be clinched by the end of January.

3. Jersey is on pace to be historically awful.

4. TO is on pace to make the playoffs with a 42.3 winning percentage.

5. Detroit's rebuilding plan may be getting fouled up, because they are on pace to make the playoffs in spite of blowing up their 4-time EC Finalist roster.

6. The Bulls are discovering that Ben Gordon was their franchise player. Shame they didn't know that last year...to be fair, it was hard to tell.

7. The Wizards have three guys capable of All-Star ball in theory, but in reality Arenas isn't right yet and it's showing. I don't normally hang on FG% too hard, but if you are sub-40%, please reconsider your shot selection. Maybe he should try to play pass-first until he's fully back? IF he ever will be.

Meanwhile there are 9 teams out west with winning records. It's still early in the season, but there isn't much hope for EC improvement barring trades, meanwhile the Clippers could be moving up once Griffin returns.

agreed. although it will probably still be tougher to get to the finals through the east than the west.

The difficulty of the playoff road depends on who you are. But for starters, an EC High seed is going to get much easier first round opponent than a WC high seed, Utah, San An and Portland will all be tough opponents (and if Griffin can sneak the Clippers in there I wouldn't call that an easy victory either). Assuming current seeds hold (not a safe assumption, but just for argument's sake), Round two, The EC 2/3 contest is tougher than the West's (I'll pick Denver easy over Dallas, while the Cavs now have someone to battle with Howard) but in 1/4 I'd rather my team play the Hawks than Phoenix. In Conference Finals, I don't see anyone having a clear match-up advantage. Who's tougher, the defending Champ or the team with the bast record? There are good reasons to go wither way. I'd say that overall the EC playoff route is easier, because of the first round opponents. The Cs could sleep through a series vs. Toronto.

Come on people. When has the Eastern conference ever been good. The only difference between 5 years ago and now is that the Eastern conference has 4 legit championship teams. Compared to 2-3 teams in the past.

they were clearly better last year, as the interconference record showed And East still has more legit contenders than West, no matter how you spin it...

True. The Celtics might not have as tough a road as the Lakers, assuming they both finish 1st (Chump, Hawks/Cavs/?, Magic/Cavs/Hawks isn't that tough). But the bottom tier teams have a much tougher road.

I agree with you that they have more legit contenders then the West but after Celtics, Magic, Cavs and Hawks, the rest of the Eastern conference is weak. The only way the Eastern conference will improve is if the Raps, Wiz and Heat start playing better.

While on the other hand the west have Nuggets, Lakers and Spurs. But teams from 4th to 8th arent that far behind.

When did the east get 4 championship teams? Only three of them have got to the finals. The other team hasn't done anything but get stomped in the 2nd round of the playoffs.

There still a contenders there improving every single season. The addition of Crawford only makes them stronger.

Bibby/Crawford hasn't been much better than Bibby/Flip Murray was. Bibby is averaging under 10PPG so his production has just fell off. Crawford has been horrible from behind the 3pt line. You can't just label a team a contender when they haven't won anything.

It just amazes me that year after year, the West is so much better than the east.

There are years where the bottom feeders of the west are on par with the bottom feeders of the east, but it just seems like overall conference quality usually seems to go with the west.

You can bank on the Lakers/Spurs/Mavs/Suns, etc being consistent year in and year out. There are only a few teams in the east that have played well for more than a few years at a time.

Age will be the downfall of the Spurs, Mavs and Suns. Unless they infuse young guys with the veterans and just stick with tired old legs, their days of being consistant are numbered.
