Wildcats? Tigers? Bulldogs? I think those are the three major contenders among high-level Division 1 schools. I mean in the SEC alone you have two teams called the Tigers, two teams called the Bulldogs, and a token Wildcats (UK). There is a team called the Wildcats in 5 of the 6 high-major basketball conferences.
And I don't even want to know how many of them mid and low major schools have one of these three names.
Wildcats (that I can think of) - Arizona, Kansas State, Kentucky, Northwestern, Davidson, Villanova, etc.
Tigers (that I can think of) - Clemson, Auburn, LSU, Memphis, Missouri, etc.
Bulldogs (that I can think of) - Georgia, Mississippi State, Butler, Gonzaga, Fresno State, Louisiana Tech, Drake, etc.
Thats because those names are used in almost all sports. Plus they are so basic and not creative. I mean you cant call a california team the buckeyes cause thats an ohio thing but you can call them the Huskies, Tigers, Eagles, Cardinals, Wildcats, Cougars, Bears etc.
