Default Re: Worst franchise in NFL History?

I am going to say that the Lions, Bengals, and Saints are the three worst franchises in NFL history.

Once upon a time, the Lions were an NFL power. They won three NFL Titles in the 50's(and beat Cleveland every time, that is why they are the team of the 50's in my book). However, the trading of Bobby Layne to Pittsburgh in 1958, and the Ford ownership starting in the early 60's started this team on a downward spiral. They have only won one playoff game since 1957, and that was in 1991. They did have good teams in the 90's, but they never had great offensive lines or good QB's. Then, when Millen took over, this team really began to turn into a joke. They let him hang on too long.

The Bengals are a "what might have been" franchise to me. I have wondered what would have happened for the Bengals if young, promising QB Greg Cook didn't get permanently hurt in 1969. I also have wondered what would have happened if Paul Brown would have promoted Bill Walsh to head coach in 1976 instead of giving the job to Bill "Tiger" Johnson. Since the Walsh snub, the Bengals have only made the playoffs six times(1981, 82, 88, 90, 05, 09) in 36 seasons, and have only had 10 or more wins in a season six times in that same span. Think about that. That blunder doesn't get enough attention.

As for the Saints, I think that the people who ran their draft and personnel decisions set the team back their first several years. When they started in 1967, it seemed to me that they made getting washed-up vets a higher priority than building through the draft. That started the team off on the wrong foot, and it took them a long time to recover. Jim Finks and Jim Mora turned the team around in the late-80's, and they made the playoffs four times, but they were never able to win a game. And, they finally got to the Super Bowl and won it at the end of the 00's, but that decade was somewhat disappointing after the promise of 2000.

Arizona Cardinals and Detriot Lions. Saints and Bucs have had their share of bad history. Oh and the Bungals.

And for anyone that says Browns, look up their history. Steelers were horrible until the 70's.

Cardinals or Bengals. Neither of these two franchises have accomplished since they've been in the league. The Cardinals had 1 super bowl appearance and the Begnals have had 2. The Browns and Lions actually used to be really good at one point. If we are looking at entire history, it has to be Cardinals or Bengals. However, if you want to talk about just Super Bowl era, its the Lions. THey made the NFC Championship game where they got rocked by my Skins.

The Bengals are in the bottom tier per said discussion, but they're not the worst and in actuality it's not even debatable, really. They just have that label as being worst of the worst, cellar dwellers, bungals, etc.

The saving grace for the Saints is their stellar season + SB last year. Now, that leaves the Cardinals. They've recently came on the past few seasons but they're still a few notable seasons away from being up to the Bengals level.

Look at our season's per decade:

1960s
Decade Record: 7-20-1

1970s
Decade Record: 74-70

1980s
Decade Record: 81-71

1990s
Decade Record: 52-108

2000s
Decade Record: 68-91

_____

Not the best... but not the worst either.
