The teams that would be moving on to the NBA’s second season have been known for some time. The only question was who would be playing who with a number of positions and hence opening round match-ups up for grabs up until the end of the final game of the regular season.
San Antonio and Dallas ended the regular season against each other Wednesday night (a game the Mavericks would win 96-89) knowing full well the likelihood that the in-state rivals would meet in the opening round of the playoffs. Sure enough, for the fifth time in the last decade a fellow Texas based team is going to decide the fate of the other.
Over the last nine playoff seasons the Mavericks and Spurs have met four times. Back in 2001 the two teams met in the Conference Semifinals with the Spurs winning easily 4 games to 1 only to get swept by the Lakers in the Conference Finals. The two teams would meet again in the 2003 playoff season, this time in the Conference Finals.
