No. That stuff you're talking about only represents a tiny piece of hiphop. Anyway, 9/10th of singers you hear on the radio don't write their songs themselves, so why would you classify them as musicians?

If someone wants to call themselves an amateur musician, so be it. Just don't sing someone elses song, and call yourself an artist.

You clearly don't understand the cultural implications. Hip hop is black music that has permeated the culture enough that yes, all races of people rap now. But to dismiss "the majority of rappers" as "gang wars, loser music" is ignorant to the roots of this black cultural music and borderline racist.

It's an ignorant blanket statement at best, and racist at worst.

The semantics of the word "musician" is a whole other argument. I've played guitar in bands for 10+ years, but rapping is still harder and involves rhythmic cadences that indeed can be measured musically, sort of like drumming with words.

You guys can sit around arguing that rappers are musicians, but you won;t change my mind. I think what they do is talent-less and they lack class. You won't change my opinion, and I don't care what your opinion is.

I have friends of every colour the world over, and none of the, would call me racist for not liking rap music. Any intelligent or self-respecting person wouldn't be listening to that crap.

Even the folks at NBA2K10 realise that. Check out the soundtrack, Metric, MGMT etc. There is still rap on there, but it's not the class-less crap that the majority of Top 40 idiots listen to.

Few pages in and no mention of the only guy I can think of that could've made a living through music without ever touching a basketball, Wayman Tisdale. RIP.

Y'know, there is clearly a quality difference between the music of Talib Kweli and the music of, let's say Ron Artest or Soulja Boy.

I think it's close-minded to dismiss that all rap music is crap and talentless. Heck, some of these rappers can play instruments (like B.O.B., Wyclef Jean, Pharrell Williams).

The Roots
Outkast
Common
Atmosphere
A Tribe Called Quest
Mos Def
Talib Kweli

... the list goes on. These rap groups are intelligent, classy, socially important and politically informed. Calling all rappers classless losers is like calling all basketball players criminal thugs. Ignorant, race-based mob thinking.
