One of the greatest for sure... RIP Coach Wooden, you left quite a footprint...

"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are."

"You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."

those might be my two favorites. it is time to celebrate his life as another poster said (sorry, don't want to go back ). by all accounts, he lived a long and fruitful life. i can't speak for wooden, but he wouldn't want us to be be sad or mourn. he'd want us to be inspired and compelled. his spirit will live on.

I've always been blown away by #3. All of them are great and set the stage for a pretty good life path...

When John Wooden graduated from elementary school, his dad gave him a $2 bill and a card. On one side of the card was this poem by Reverend Henry Van Dyke:

Four things a man must learn to do
If he would make his life more true:
To think without confusion clearly,
To love his fellow-man sincerely,
To act from honest motives purely,
To trust in God and Heaven securely.

On the other side of the card, Joshua Wooden wrote “Seven Things to Do:”

1. Be True To Yourself

2. Help Others
“You can’t live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.”

3. Make Each Day Your Masterpiece

“Don’t measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability.”

And he warns: “Never mistake activity for achievement.”

4. Drink deeply from good books

5. Make friendship a fine art

6. Build a shelter against a rainy day

7. Pray for guidance and count and give thanks for your blessings every day

RIP. John Wooden will be missed. He contributed so much to the game. I'm thankful for that.

This guy was the definition of a professional he didn't only coach basketball he coached character.
Quote:
"What you are as a person is far more important that what you are as a basketball player."

Quote:
"Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out."

"Never mistake activity for achievement."

"Adversity is the state in which man mostly easily becomes acquainted with himself, being especially free of admirers then."

"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are."

"Be prepared and be honest."

"You can't let praise or criticism get to you. It's a weakness to get caught up in either one."

"You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."

"What you are as a person is far more important that what you are as a basketball player."

"Winning takes talent, to repeat takes character."

"A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment."

"I'd rather have a lot of talent and a little experience than a lot of experience and a little talent."

"If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?"

"If you're not making mistakes, then you're not doing anything. I'm positive that a doer makes mistakes."

"It isn't what you do, but how you do it."

"Ability is a poor man's wealth."

"Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be."

"Consider the rights of others before your own feelings, and the feelings of others before your own rights."

"Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do."

"Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability."

"It's not so important who starts the game but who finishes it."

"It's what you learn after you know it all that counts."

"It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen."

"Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful."

"The main ingredient of stardom is the rest of the team."

"Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming."

"Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It's courage that counts."

My favorite quote from John Wooden..

Quote:
I’m concerned about the basketball today, somewhat. I think it’s becoming too much showmanship and I don’t like that. If I want showmanship, I’ll go see the Globetrotters. In the pros today, the player that I’d rather see than anybody else is John Stockton from Utah, the all-time leader in assists. It’s not just because he’s the all-time leader in assists. It’s his demeanor. He’s a spirited player but never gets mad. He’s quick., he’s intelligent, he’s unselfish and he can do all things well.

Couldn't agree more... RIP
