Default Boston RedSox the definiton of NUTS

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2662193

$51.1mil just to talk to this mofo. They get thier money back if he doesnt sign. But if he does decide to sign (SCott Boras his agent) he wants to be paid like a #1 pitcher so we're taslkin $13mil per. And Boras said a 3yr deal is what they are seeking so he can be free by age 29. If he decides to SIGN a 3yr $13mil deal Boston is now paying $90mil just for 1 pitcher they think will help that never pitched in the big leagues.

That figure alone is teams payroll. Phillies are trying to sign some free agents and get thier payroll up to that figure. Hilarious how Boston tosses this with ease. And this is to stop the Yankees whom this Jap pitcher wants to play for.

He's a really good pitcher but this is ridiculous. For that money they could've signed a Jason Schmidt, Julio Lugo AND a good OF.

He's also a flyball pitcher (questionable for Fenway) and throws tons of pitches per start in Japan. Wonder if health issues will ever pop up as I remember reading about him throwing 130-150 pitches per start.

Now maybe when people whine about the Yankees "ruining baseball", they can finally add in the Red Sox in there. This bidding fee doesn't go against their salary cap but it's still a gigantic amount.

I guess one year of being a 3rd place team leads to drastic measures...

Scott Boras was on 570am radio in L.A. this morning and he claims that teams that sign Japanese star players make about $25-30 million extra revenue per year just from people in Japan AND Japanese-Americans. Also, Boston succeeded in stopping the Yanks from getting him!

I know but still man. To just toss $51mil away like that is wild. I wonder what contract he signs because Scott Boras isnt a pushover agent. He gets his players cash. Already made it known atleast 12-13mil per.

I heard dude over there is a legend. Did some crap like pitch for 14 innings, then pitcher the next day or game and threw a no hitter. Has 5 pitchers he can throw for strikes. I mean a lot of hype and a legacy he has over there. I mean its insane to throw that kind of money to negotiate with dude.

If Boston does sign him he BETTER show and prove because its WS or bust.

Doesn't a lot of that go to revenue sharing anyways?? I thought there is a geographical area limit as to where ALL of the money goes to that team while anything outside of it goes to the revenue sharing system.

I'm positive there is such a system for merchandise sales but not sure about other things...

I'd like to see proof of that. He means Japs in America or Japs in Boston (i dont think none exist!). Did that happen with the NYY with Matsui or Ichiro in Seattle (which i believe has a asian community no? being as tho they are on the side where thier homeland is).

Ichiro actually has a huge sian following. Every game i go to theres always a few groups of tourists who go nuts for ichiro. Tons of Asians wearing Ichiro Jerseys around. Even when Kaz Sasaki was on the team, he had a big following. But, seattle is probably has a much higher asian population than Boston. But, they should still sell merchandise overseas, and it could make Boston a more popular Asian tour destination.

he ends up being amazing, then they get to laugh at everyone. I don't know how likely that is, but they did go over the top, but they have plenty of money, if that's what they wanna do with it, then godspeed...

Jason schmidt would get torn a new a-hole in the AL east.

be forewarned I am a Red Sox fan

Great signing, the kid's the reason japan won the WBC

Ichiro has huge following in Asia, just like Nomo and ChanHo Park did before. ChienMing Wang is blowing up too. $$$ New markets, conventional wisdom needs to be thrown out the window, baseball is more profitable than ever, this season after network, merchandise and luxury tax dollars are doled out to all the teams a shiiit squad like the KC Royals will bank an extra 80-100 million (according to Peter Gammons MLB's net worth has gone from 1 something billion to 5 something billion).

Pitching is thin in the majors, if this kid can win fifteen games it will be great for the Sox.

Wicked Awesome signing

The thing is it's not a signing, it's just a base offer to let Epstein begin negotiating with Matsuzaka and the Mighty Boras. I hope our Sox get this guy too, but for all this, he better not be an A-Rod.

Red Sox = The Evil Empire number 2....

Only thing is this Empire has only won one championship in the last 90 years or something.

There is no japanese community in NY and there sure as hell isnt one in boston... he is a popular player here in japan but not to the magnitude he will become if he is successful in the states.
To put this in prespective they have segmented parts of there news just to tell people in Japan how any Japanese player is doing in any foreign country. The red sox's will see that money back and more from the Japanese community world wide!
Daisuke did pitch in the world baseball classic 3-0 record and 1.38 ERA I have seen him pitch and he is amazing... He does have command over 5 pitches and they all are thrown 90's and better. Doesnt mean much until he faces the power of the AL although Japanese players are better contact hitters.
As a Yankee fan I hate to seem him go to the Red Sox because he may be just as dominant. Also the Yankees have major starting pitching issues Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Mussina (16 years in MLB), Randy Johnson (18 years in MLB) is coming off back surgery and Carl Pavano (who has more injuries than an NFL running back!)
The new regime in Yankee ville is not spending crazy funds on players anymore... were trimming the fat and preparing for our new stadium!

PS the red sox has more holes on the team than the swiss cheese so good luck with trying to field a team.
