What type of program are you trying to get into? For me atleast, i have spent a good amount of my time outside school. I've managed to work 300 hours of community service, 150 of that clinical. I was fortunate enough to do decent on my MCATS (i took them in may). But because i am going into a PHD program as well, my published paper(s) will give me a boost. But yeah, make sure you do A LOT outside school. It helps when you have to do your secondary's and for your interviews.
Hmm... not so much clubs, but i was apart of some such as "health care professions". Most of my outside stuff comes from a organization i started in Mexico. We have volunteer dentists and physicians come down there and help those in need. I was able to get funding from the school initially, but we've gotten some major sponsors helping us on this and are planning on opening our own office.
It's not difficult. I actually stepped down from that so a friend of mine could get his credit. They mostly want to see three types of community service. 1) Clinical 2) Nonclinical Ex/ church, 3) Any that shows leadership. When you start something like this or a club at school, it gives you something to talk about during the interviews. I would say it is a huge boost...
Do you have any lab experience? Check this out, i just ran this the other day, let me know if you can recognize it:
