That pretty much says it. People love his 40/40 and HR totals but they overlook the fact that he's simply not an efficient hitter (why do people overlook OBP when it's probably the one stat you should look at first to see how good/efficient a hitter is?) and no sure bet as a good fielder in the OF. Too bad Dusty Baker isn't around anymore, him and his dumb "on-base % just clogs the bases" philosophy would be perfect here.

Like raider wrote, a career .320-.330 OBP and now in LF isn't worth anything near that. But as I said before, IF they put him at CF and IF he plays there very well that increases his value immensely and might put him close to being worth that money... for the first 4 maybe 5 years of the deal.

After a couple offseasons of what seemed to be teams calming down with the huge deals, it's getting back up there.

Carlos Lee is one happy man right now. He knows he's going to cash in huge as well.

What a horrible signing. They don't even really need bats, they need pitching and defense.

Should have thrown all that money at the Japanese pitcher or Zito.

I think Kobe got a similar deal cept shorter

The Cubs are really looking to improve fast, that is easy to tell. Soriano should help them a lot though. Between him and Ramirez, they've spent a great deal of money this offseason...

Because people dont know/understand what OBP% and how meaningful a stat it really is. Been conditioned to look at HR's & RBI's. The whole 40/40 thing just sounds great. No one cares to look at anything else.

Basically my point. I dont think OBP is the only stat of any importance or anything but i couldnt give a guy who makes an out more than twice as often as he gets on base a huge contract like this.

BTW i had the wrong stats I apologize, his OBP over the last 2 years is higher than that because of his career year last year(baseball cube hasnt updated to include last year yet...) but his career OBP is 325 and his obp the 2 previous years was 317.

Plus, hes a free swinger and those guys age quickly...(except Franco)

Who can the Phillies get? They need a bat for Ryan in the worst way. The Cubs beat em to the punch.

Carlos Lee would be ok but he is possibly the worst defensive outfielder Ive ever seen... Im serious, he makes Jose Canseco look like Andruw Jones in his prime defensively...

Carlos Lee will be a waste of money if ANY NL team signs him. He's not THAT good of a hitter in the first place but at least in the AL teams can stash him away at DH once he just stops moving in the OF altogether.

Hes at least as good a hitter as Sori and he should get less... Now if he gets anywhere NEAR what sori got its a huge overpay...

Thats the thing...he is expecting to get about 15-16mil per now that Soriano struck oil. He's gonna try to cash in. Aramis got 5yrs 73mil (14.6mil per) while Soriano got 8yrs 136mil (17mil per)....he wants in between.

Aint worth it and I'm glad the Phillies wont entertain him dspite needed a bat to protect Ryan Howard. I'm not a Carlos Lee fan...buyer beware like a mofo!
