Question How many years did it take Magic Johnson and Larry bird to win a ring ?

Just trying to see how long it took this two guys to win one. I know it took jordan 7 years. I'm trying to figure out why Lebron is catching so much flack from bird and Magic while they didnt have to carry a whack squad to the finals, compared to what lebron had to work with.

magic was really lucky to be drafted to a great team with kareem in his MVP year.... bird waited a year after he was drafted to play for the celtics then got mchale and parish in his 2nd year as a pro and formed arguably the best front court in NBA history.

so both of them had great peices around them from the start

Even though Magic won in his rookie year, Kareem was still not only the best player on the Lakers, but the NBA. He won league MVP & should of been Finals MVP. Bird won it in his 2nd year while being the best player on his team & being a top 3 player in the NBA (Moses, Kareem, & Bird).

Magic was in the Finals his first year...and in his last real full season. In between he was in another seven (including four finals in his last five years...and one of them without Kareem.) Nine Finals and Five titles. Bird was in five finals, and won three rings. His last Finals appearance was in 1987 against Magic's Lakers. Magic went to three more Finals following that season. And, Magic had a 2-1 edge in H2H Finals.

All with equal supporting casts.

Magic IMMEDIATELY led LA to a title in his first year. He won the Finals MVP in his rookie season. Bird won a ring in his second season, but not the Finals MVP. As for who carried LA in the decade of the 80's...Magic finished ahead of Kareem in MVP balloting in EIGHT of their 10 seasons together (the last eight BTW.) Even after Kareem retired, Magic led LA to records of 63-19 and 58-24 (and another Finals appearance.) AND, after Magic retired, the Lakers dropped to 43-39...which was about what their record was BEFORE Magic arrived (47-35.)

Kareem was the Alpha Dog on that 1980 team & it's pretty obvious. Although I give credit to Magic for his spectacular game 6 performance, I still would have given the MVP to Kareem.

1980 NBA Finals
Kareem: 33.4 PPG . 13.6 RPG . 3.2 APG . 4.6 BPG . 55 FG%
Magic: 21.5 PPG . 11.2 RPG . 8.7 APG . 2.7 SPG . 5 TOPG . 57 FG%

It's obvious Kareem was the TRUE Finals MVP. Everyone talks about Magic's game 6, but Kareem's game 5 is forgotten, he had 40 points, 15 boards, 4 blocks while playing through injury.

I won't argue that...but having that, Kareem won the Finals MVP in '85, but it was Magic who carried that team that season.

Most people are probably not aware of this, but Magic outrebounded Kareem in a few seasons...and in FIVE of their eight Finals, as well.

WORD!

Everybody except one who played for the Fakers are overrated. The underrated one happens to be the best: Kareem Abdul Jabbar. The GOAT Lakers. Arguably NBA GOAT.

That *** Magic and the rapist Kobe aren't even half as good as Kareem was.

Now, it's different. Magic joined the GOAT.

Bird got Parish and McHale who ultimately became HOFer but it's not like getting Kareem... hell, it's not even like getting Pau Gasol. Parish was a chronic underachiever, and McHale was still an unproven rookie.

Now, Duncan also got his ring in the 2nd season and he joined a team with past-his-prime David Robinson. That's why Duncan is also awesome and definitely one of the best 10 players of all time.

Yep...that explains Magic joining a Laker team that had had four straight ordinary years, and early playoff exits...and leading them to a 60-22 record and a title in his first year. That explains that during Magic's 12 seasons, LA averaged 59 wins a year. That explains that AFTER Kareem retired, the Lakers IMPROVED from 57-25 to 63-19 (and would go the Finals the next season.) And, that explains LA dropping to 43-39 AFTER Magic retired.

That's why Lakers were 5-0 in the games Magic missed that season.

Or why when they kept track of +/- stats in the Blazers series (WCSF), Kareem was far ahead of everyone else on the team:

Worthy +46
Rambis +29
Abdul-Jabbar +72
Johnson +48
Cooper +22

Or why in their only close win of that series (game 3) Kareem was the one scoring to keep them ahead (11 pts in fourth).

Or why the only game Lakers lost in the WCF was when Kareem had a bad game and was ejected. They actually lost home court in that series, guess who went out on the road to win the two road games? Kareem, especially the game 4 where he had 29/12/8/4.

Or why against the team they were setting to beat all year, it was Kareem who not only carried the team, but completely shifted the series after the memorial day massacre with a 30/17/8 game. When Kareem had a poor game 1, the Lakers were being written off, they had the worst loss in finals history but guess what changed the series around for the Lakers after that? Kareem averaging 28.4 ppg, 10.2 rpg, 6 apg on 61% shooting over the next 5 games (four of which Lakers won) and snatching away the title from Boston.

Quit lying and spreading misinformation like usual. That was Kareem's team, they called him captain, he was the on/off court leader of the team, they gave him the ball when the game was on the line, they relied on his length to change shots when players got in the lane, they went to him before anyone else when it became a half court game. At worst it was a 1A / 1B situation.
