Default OT: UCLA student shot with Taser 5-6 times after failing to show ID in library.

Quote:
UCPD officers shot a student several times with a Taser inside the Powell Library CLICC computer lab late Tuesday night before taking him into custody.

No university police officers were available to comment further about the incident as of 3 a.m. Wednesday, and no Community Service Officers who were on duty at the time could be reached.

At around 11:30 p.m., CSOs asked a male student using a computer in the back of the room to leave when he was unable to produce a BruinCard during a random check. The student did not exit the building immediately.

The CSOs left, returning minutes later, and police officers arrived to escort the student out. By this time the student had begun to walk toward the door with his backpack when an officer approached him and grabbed his arm, at which point the student told the officer to let him go. A second officer then approached the student as well.

The student began to yell "get off me," repeating himself several times.

It was at this point that the officers shot the student with a Taser for the first time, causing him to fall to the floor and cry out in pain. The student also told the officers he had a medical condition.

UCPD officers confirmed that the man involved in the incident was a student, but did not give a name or any additional information about his identity.

Video shot from a student's camera phone captured the student yelling, "Here's your Patriot Act, here's your ****ing abuse of power," while he struggled with the officers.

As the student was screaming, UCPD officers repeatedly told him to stand up and said "stop fighting us." The student did not stand up as the officers requested and they shot him with the Taser at least once more.

"It was the most disgusting and vile act I had ever seen in my life," said David Remesnitsky, a 2006 UCLA alumnus who witnessed the incident.

As the student and the officers were struggling, bystanders repeatedly asked the police officers to stop, and at one point officers told the gathered crowd to stand back and threatened to use a Taser on anyone who got too close.

Laila Gordy, a fourth-year economics student who was present in the library during the incident, said police officers threatened to shoot her with a Taser when she asked an officer for his name and his badge number.

Gordy was visibly upset by the incident and said other students were also disturbed.

"It's a shock that something like this can happen at UCLA," she said. "It was unnecessary what they did."

Immediately after the incident, several students began to contact local news outlets, informing them of the incident, and Remesnitsky wrote an e-mail to Interim Chancellor Norman Abrams.

This is just disgusting and completely out of line. This isn't some criminal needing to be detained; this is a college kid who was minding his own business and seemed to be pretty much doing what he was asked (exiting the library). Five cops on one kid? One kid that was actually complying with the people who asked him to exit the library (granted, he didn't do it in a timely manner, but the last I checked that was not a call for tasering)? Yeah, that's a complete and total abuse of power and **** like this makes it easy to see why the average law-abiding citizen hates and distrusts the police.

I think the capper for me is that one of the cops threatened to taser another student for asking for his name and badge number. I mean, seriously, what the ****? To blame the victim here is ludicrous. You don't deserve to be tasered into the ground because you have a bit of attitude. And in case, he was leaving the library when they put their hands on him. Would it have killed them to just wait and ascertain whether or not he was leaving or just going to the washroom?

He was Middle Eastern. No doubt that this was racially motivated. The guy also got a Civil Rights lawyer because of this.

I go to UCLA. Only students are allowed in the library after 9pm so the security makes rounds asking for IDs after hours. The guy refused to show his ID so they asked him to leave. He wasn't cooperative so they had to use force. I do think the police used excessive force, but the guy was being a complete ass. I'm gonna be pretty pissed off if this guy gets millions of dollars in his law suit forcing tuition to increase.

And to DLakerfan. Have you ever been electrocuted? It makes your muscles all lock up and it's painful as hell. Think before you make "manly" statements.

Yes, I've been electrocuted twice in my life, once when I was flying kite and I had to go up to an electric pole to retrive the kite, it feels painful at first but at the end it excites me. Second time was when I was taking a shower and an open electric wire touched the water I'm using and it was painful but it excites me again, I guess I just have a fetish for electic shock, in fact my favorite line dance is Electric Boogie.

hes being sarcastic you idiots.

but yeah... we dont have the full story here. we all kind of want this to be total abuse by the police and their power... but as far as I can tell from reading background information and seeing the video it looks like the kid was taunting the police. he apparently played the "dont touch me I'm leaving **** you" card as soon as they asked him to show ID. i don't know that for sure but it would definately take some defiance on his part to get the situation from an ID check to an arrest.

does that warrant the use of a taser? i dont think so. the police had the strength to pull him up and drag his ass off wherever they were taking him. it seems bad to just tase him for non-violently laying on the ground after being tased. I think they should have just dragged his ass off to the station or whatever.

did race play into this at all? maybe but I doubt it. apparently he wouldn't leave the library in a timely manner but none of us know what transpired between him and the library staff that made them call the police. I doubt they would call them without giving a final warning or threatening him with the police. He did have an arabic name but I doubt this is a case of racial profiling... none of us really know all the details though.

The way that Arab-Americans are being treated in this country since 9/11 is SHAMEFUL and DISGUSTING. This guy would have NEVER been tasered if he was not Middle Eastern. Anyone who thinks or says otherwise is an IDIOT.

This is the most RACIST and PREJUDICE country in the world! I hope this guy sues UCLA for every penny!!!
