Qualitative: Rivers plays with passion, and leads his team to comebacks by bringing in veteran type confidence (as a first year starter, even with a rookie left tackle). Sheli looks lost sad all the time, makes more mistakes, and QUITS on a team before he even plays for them.

advantage: Phillip Rivers

[quote]East Coast Offense: Family Business

By Christopher Liss
November 22, 2006

Watching the last two Giants games, it's clear to me that Eli Manning was forced into the family business against his will. It was a little bit like Michael Corleone in the "Godfather," only Al Pacino's character was unexpectedly good at the job. To his credit, Eli resisted, and when things got bad last season, he considered looking for ordinary work, but then his brother ridiculed every other occupation in national commercials to keep Eli in line. What's worse is that the Mannings refused to let Eli play in San Diego, where Marty Schottenheimer would have hidden Eli's weaknesses by running the ball every play. Eli could have mailed it in as a handoff specialist, while secretly keeping his hopes to do something other than football alive. Instead, the Mannings forced Eli into the largest media market in the country, and the Giants' bad turf and poor training staff has ensured enough defensive injuries every year to force Eli to throw unconscionable interceptions at the worst possible times. Your family might not understand at first, but it's time to make a clean break. And besides, who doesn't want to see 300-pound Jared Lorenzen in the same backfield as 265-pound Brandon Jacobs?[quote]

Philip Rivers came out of college a damn good passer. Got overshadowed by the last name QB named Eli Manning. Rivers wowed scouts in thr Senior Bowl. Really boosted him. But the Eli Manning hype/pedigree won out plus Rivers went thru the whole contract mess and got crapped on. Then to further push Rivers out of the spotlight Drew Brees had an amazing year. Last thing is Eli has looked good at moments and others not so. 2yrs on the bench and starting his 3rd year playing with a great RB in Tomilson. Not a bad way for any young QB to start. He's playing well. Compl% sticks out. SD needs to land a playmaker at WR and that will be an even scary offense. It would take the defenses attention off Gates.

The weird thing is, I think the Charger team is already sold on their wideout crew. Assuming McCardell retires after this year (don't know his contract status), they are still in love with Eric Parker/Vincent Jackson/Malcolm Floyd. I like Jackson's potential, and Parker/Rivers seems to be a good duo. Add that to the fact that this team operates through the drafts, rather than free agent pickups, I don't think this team will have a true #1 reciever in the forseeable future. But I think their WR's are underrated and serviceable.

Yeah with Tomilson and A.Gates you have to recieving threats so you dont need a Steve Smith, Chad Johnson at WR. SD doesnt need to get new WR's if they feel those are serviceable because other QB's have played with ok/good/servicable recieving units and the team excelled. Ehhh.

Two names to think about at WR. Sidney Rice out of SC & Jeff Samardzija from Notre Dame. If SD can add either one...its a good look. Rice would be my first choice. Crazy talent. Potential #1 WR. Not sure if he'll go early than whenever SD may pick. Calvin Johnson, Dwayne Jarret and Teddy Ginn Jr will go before him (unless scouts are woo'ed and they should be).

Yep, the Chargers don't have any kind of deep threat. Merriman's absence will hurt them more than anything else obviously. We're going to see a renaissance in QB's the next few years. Guys like Leinart, Alex Smith and Rivers are going to be tearing it up in the league.

Although I'm a Giants fan and admit that I'm not nearly as a good a football guy as I am with basketball I was pissed when the Giants traded for Eli.

He's a chump getting by on nepotism. If his name wasn't Manning he would not even been a top 20 pick let alone the first guy taken.

How about the Chargers anyway. First they passed up on Michael Vick and trade down to get LT, then a few years later, Eli and his dad whine their way out of getting drafted by San Diego and end up getting Philip Rivers. I don't know if their management is smart or just damn lucky.

BTW, what did the Chargers get in return from Atlanta for trading down and getting LT?

Nothing...3rd round pick (Tay Cody). Basically Tomilson for Vick. That was an even deal.

The Eli for Rivers, Kaeding, Merriman trade was lopsidded. However what it did do i believe for NY is clear cap space for them to sign some free agents which helped thier team. Gotta figure out who they signed and/or reupped. I know Antonio Pierce was one player. RT McKenzie. So the trade itself was lopsided but i think when you look deeper into it there was more to it. I'm gonna ask Giants fans on this board i check out beause they are a knowlegable bunch. Actually a topic about this trade. Gonna read and see what other benefits did NY gain besides Eli. I'm pretty sure cap space was a big thing with the trade.

Also you can ask yourself if Merriman will be suspended again?

Rivers vs Eli is a good debate and I'd say right now give me Rivers. Eli aint doing the job. He's has talented skill players around him. Even when they were heatlhy. Ehhhh

SD did itself good trading 2 #1 picks. Because with thier pick in the 2nd round they got Drew Brees of the Tomilson trade.

There hasn't been much more to the Eli trade. The cap space created was somewhat minimal cause Eli was still paid as the top pick and you can not guarantee if the picks they lost would have made the team.

To add something else, if a story I once read is true the Vick/LT trade could have been really lopsided if San Diego didn't balk on taking Steve Smith in the third round.

Story made it sound like the Chargers had his name ready to go but decided to go defense at the last second.

If that's true that would have been a crazy offensive group.

Atlanta wins just because of that story. J/K but what idiots!

I like to believe if they got Steve Smith they dont get Rivers and end up having to keep Drew Brees? Or they draft a QB not named Rivers but someone they end up going with instead of Brees? Drew wasnt really the popular guy in SD as far as mgmt. With his height still bothering them, his injury and price tag...SD wasnt really interested keeping him around long term. Maybe this changes? Cause if it does...holy crap what an offensive unit.
