I was thinking Thorpe as a candidate at first. I think he should be eligible. He'd be #1 overall talent.

With the 5th pick in the draft, I select:

Roger Federer: Widely regarded as the GOAT tennis player to fans, players (both past and present. Most notably- Sampras, Agassi, Laver, Borg, and McEnroe), and analysts. He plays a solo sport, therefore his success is a product of his abilities and not the talent that surrounds him.

Accomplishments:They speak for themselves
1) 16 Grand Slam titles (most in tennis history). Will probably win more.
2) 23 straight semi-final appearances (Add together the two next best and they still fall 3 short of his 23)
3) 80% win pct
4) Has the record for most consecutive weeks @ #1(237 weeks)
5) 5 tour championships
6) All-time leader for most prize money made

Marketability:Is a super-nice guy and has won 5-consecutive sportsmanship award, which is voted by the players themselves. He has deals with (most notably):
Nike
Rolex
Gillete
Mercedes
Lindt

Longevity: The best consistency of any tennis player, ever. 23 straight semis, which is not even remotely close to being matched. Won 16 of the last 27 GS. It says a lot about the consistency of his play and his ability to stay healthy (as opposed to Nadal, who has missed several slams due to health reasons).

I have a guy I'm planning on taking with my 2nd pick who could slip pretty far, but I'm not willing to risk it.

To be honest, I really disagree. He is the undisputed GOAT in a solo sport. His accomplishments drown those of his competitors for that title. A player with his all-around abilities on every surface has not been seen. Nor has his consistency, which rivals that of any other great athlete, regardless of sport.

I had some other ideas, that certainly were first-round options, but I felt Fed was better and I can defend him much better since I am knowledgeable about him and the sport as a whole, both presently and historically.
