Default Warner Bros. Dreaming of a Sequel to Christopher Nolanís 'Inception'?

Warner Bros. Dreaming of a Sequel to Christopher Nolanís INCEPTION?

Itís no secret that Christopher Nolanís Inception was a worldwide phenomenon. Hell, itís still being parodied by the likes of South Park. Recent news suggests, however, that Warner Bros. is itching to add to the lucrative box office run of the sci-fi/fantasy/action epic Ė by making a sequel. No, seriously. Australian site Whatís Playing recently broke the news that the studio has expressed interest in a sequel, but that the decision would fall squarely Ė we hope Ė on Nolanís shoulders.

Nolan clearly enjoyed the experience of making the film and has recently stated plans to develop a video game based on the concept of Inception. However, aside from a couple of prequel comics, which further add to the story of master ďextractorĒ Dom Cobb, there really isnít a logical way to further explore the world of Inception on the big screen without marring the original. All of this sounds quite absurd, but it does beg the question of just how far a Hollywood studio will go to make money. Hit the jump for more mind bending talk.

Inception is easily one of the best films of the year Ė a stupendous, jaw-dropping, cerebral experience that more or less kicked the ass of every mainstream Hollywood film released last summer. Nolan has emerged as a true iconic filmmaker, one who surely deserves some Oscar-merit come awards season. The film proved Leonardo DiCaprio could work with someone other than Martin Scorsese, and that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a true Hollywood star in the making. The film also boasted one of composer Hans Zimmerís finest works.

The question though, is does Inception need a sequel? I will not reveal spoilers, so readers need not worry, but I will say the film ended rather ambiguously, and has since prompted heated discussion across the internet in regards to its deeper meanings. To add another piece to the puzzle would kinda be like Ridley Scott directing another Blade Runner with the lead character Deckard as a robot from the get-go Ė despite what Scott may or may not have intended, by forcing his views upon us, it ruins the thought-provoking, rhetorical questions fashioned throughout the original, and blatantly robs fans of nearly 30 years worth of inspiring interpretation. The same would happen with Nolanís film.

Itís nice to see that Nolan, who is busy on pre-production work for Batman 3, has not participated in any of these ďdiscussionsĒ (if they do exist). In any case, if he wants to maintain his integrity as a filmmaker, the man needs to distance himself from this as much as possible. We donít need another pair of sequels akin to The Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions.

Tellingly, Iím intrigued by the idea of an Inception video game. To expand upon the world via a gaming console is a nifty idea, because it doesnít screw with the film.

Sometimes one is enough.

What do you think? Should Nolan go for it? Do you want more Inception?

I would support a prequel but not a sequel...

And they would probably need an entire new cast. (Although they could still use Leo, JGL, and that Tom Hardy Guy as a crew... and Michael Cane).

SPOILERS!!!

Maybe they could somehow end the prequel by showing COBB enter a dreamworld that is eventually the entire sequel (part 1)... thus suggesting that the top was still spinning at the end of part 1... and then maybe that could lead to a part 3.

meaning:

Part 1 = Dream World (Middle)
Part 2 = Real World (Beginning)...(ends with COBB falling into dream world)
Part 3 = Real World or Dream World (End)... (starts with COBB going back from outside with his children to the Kitchen Table and realizes that his Top his still spinning)

If Nolan does it the right way he would have successfully completed two of the greatest Trilogies ever.... but deep down this Inception needs to be left alone... no prequel or sequel will be made I'm guessing... and that's a good thing.

Actually... from her point of view:

The Top is very relevant... She was trying to convince Leo that he was dreaming... like Leo had to convince Ken Wantanabe that he was dreaming.

But unless there is a sequel we will never know if she was right.

a lot of fans missed how important her role was in this movie... maybe she was the only one that got out of the dream world (very confusing stuff).

the top spinning or falling at the end of the movie is just not that relevant imo
because it could spin or fall regardless if he is in a dream or not.
It's not even his original totem to begin with, therefore, it can't be used as a symbol that indicates whether he is in his dream or not.

Replace Cobb with GOBB and you're sweeping the Oscars

Anyway, Warner Bros. is f*cking retarded to even conceive this. I'm not entirely positive, but Nolan appears to be under contract with WB via Legendary Pictures (Batman Begins, Prestige, and TDK were all released as WB/Legendary productions I believe). This very article says that Nolan is in pre-production for Batman 3 will make hundreds of millions again for them. I know it's Hollywood, but stop being so gd selfish and let the artist make his art, Nolan's fan base is so enormous that I don't ever see one of his WB produced films ever being a financial disappointment. Part of Inception's appeal was its originality and freshness, don't ruin that with a forced remake. Let Nolan create another project as inventive as Inception.

/Rant

Yes we have all seen the film and understand the meaning of the top. The movie isn't confusing. the characters all SPELL out exactly what is happening and what they are thinking to dispel confusion. In fact that's one of the weak points of hte movie, too much focus on these rules of this fictious reality.

The top doesn't fall cause nolan wants to incite discussion about "omg was that the real world or not dood" The movie isn't deep or complicated enough to warrant a trilogy without it simply becoming some blatantly exploitative crap. There are much better materials about the subject than inception. The visual effects were stunning, but the relatively shallow story and its dragged out midparts make the movie not as great as people claimed it to be.

The only thing that confuses me about inception is why the asian guy doesn't want to kill himself like Dicaprio's wife did.

No, but he brought the asian guy the same way as he did his wife if I remember correctly, but he didn't try and kill himself like Dicaprio's wife did.

I don't like it a sequel would be like a mission impossible meets the matrix thing with the drummed up extra action they would have to blow into it. This guy needs a character to work with. Its what he does.

Actually he needs two characters to work with. His main characters have a tendency to suck compared to their foils.
