The other huge question mark is what exactly Dark Energy is.

Because Einstein was right about the speed limit with one known exception and that is space itself. The Universe is expanding faster than the speed of light. And since it's actually speeding up we know there's a force that's constantly accelerating it. So there is something out there not only driving the Universe's expansion but doing it at a rate faster than the speed of light.

What is this force?

It also shows that warp drives are the optimal tool because we now know that we can use space itself to propele ourselves faster than the speed of light. In theory that is...

Dark matter is another particle that physicists are torn as well. But nothing else right now makes sense. So why are Tachyons all of the sudden BS because there's no proof. Dark Matter has no physical proof to it.

Phoenix18 exists.

Yep. If not that then there's a few other more tangible ways of doing it. space-time manipulation, using ion engines, etc.

I'm not astronomogist, but I whenever I hear about Dark Energy, the assumption always seems to be that there is a force present within the Universe that is driving it apart. But to me it would seem much more logical (on a very complex scale) that it is simply a vacuum effect of space expanding into whatever is outside its current limits. Like a hole in a submarine where water shoots in, or a hole in a space ship where the air goes rushing out. Couldn't the vacuum of what's beyond space basically be just sucking it ever outward??

Reaching light speed isn't the only problem though. The danger of space debris which is already traveling at crazy speeds is present enough right now. Navigating through space at the speed of light would be immensely difficult and dangerous.

You don't get it. It is not possible to exceed the speed of light by mechanical means.

....yet. The universe is expanding faster than light. so there IS a way of traveling faster than light. the question is how. I look at it this way: in the next 100-150 years we'll figure out near light speed travel. then after that it's testing the laws of known physics into the unknown and actually succeeding. The only thing I foresee truly holding back mankind from figuring it out besides nuclear war, is the cost of it all.

I've never heard of that vaccum theory, it's interesting. Is that something you've seen or is that you postulating? But the issue that perplexes cosmologists now is that the Universe is accelerating. Which I think would point to something pushing it. They even have that Cosmic Rip theory that the Universe is tearing itself apart! (Lisa!)

Also since we can't see out of the Universe or even if there is an end, we don't know what's beyond it. Nothing? Another universe, it is a different dimensional thing? Who knows? Is the Universe a 2-d collection of information and the other dimensions are a by product of that information? (Planetary. Great comic. Haha.)

And that is very true. Even with wormholes it's a crap shoot. Because even if you account for 99% of the objects in space, that 1% equals a huge amount of stuff that can fck you up. It is likely that we as a species will travel the cosmos generationally if that. We'll float in space as a peoples for years and years and years. Or we'll be stuck on the rocks around us.

But there's always hoping.

To my knowledge, it is a repulsive force that is present from the presence of negative pressure that dominates the universe.

Have you ever taken a physics class? He's right. It is physically impossible for an object to travel at the speed of light. Tachyons are a mathematical game and are just hypothetical. You can also make the argument that speed is relative and that we can travel at the speed of light relative to another object in expanding space.

I don't think humans can ever travel at the speed of light, just as I think time travel is impossible too.
