Well, you are back playing, so congrats. I will say for others that read the thread- if you are unsure of the severity, get radiographs to rule out avulsion fractures. Apply cold occasionally to reduce edema (swelling can be a good thing as it is the body's response to injury and is required for healing) but don't over do it. It is one thing if you are a paid athelte, or in an organized program such as scholastic ball, another if you have a job to go tot he next day and need to use the feet, therefore quick recovery for balling is not necessary. Ankle sprains can take a long time to heal (6+ months) it is just that most people can function within a week or so of initial injury and think they can go back on the court.

Can also try traction applied by rubber bands (I think the website is something like "donticethatsprain" or something along that. I never had much luck with it with my athletes but some did respond to that treatment.

I've had ankle sprains so bad that I had bruising up to my knee. Welcome to weak ankles for life, bro. When it's stronger, buy a resistance band and start doing ankle strengthening exercises.

Also, plenty of people play in low tops without issue, it's all about how the shoe fits your foot rather than if it's a low/mid/high.

Omfg, so I sprained the same exact ankle today again... It wasn't as bad this time, I took a jump shot, my foot landed, and then it just twisted but the thing is it hurts even worse because I didn't let it heal all the way the first time, (I started playing again about 2 weeks after my first sprain.) Man, I shouldn't have played it was still just a little swollen still before I sprained it. Now it's almost as badly swollen as last time. I'm definitely seeing the doctor tomorrow. I just took a tylenol cause I can't bear it anymore.

f*ck I'm probably not going to be playing for a few months now...

Same thing happened to me in the summer. I came back from a sprain in a couple weeks and rolled it on someones foot when I came down. I just shut it down for month and a half.. this happened in August and my ankle is still kinda puffy, but I'm able to play now. Since it happened twice, you have to give it a lot of time to heal because even if it may feel fine to walk/run, it's still weak and easier to roll.

Bummer man, I've definitely been there before. There always comes a time where it's just too irresistable to not play. The ankle feels painless when you walk around, you can shoot on it just fine, you can shoot some practice layups. But there always has to be that extra couple of weeks or rehab to make sure it's truly good and strong.

My worst ankle sprain came when I was coaching a group of 8th graders. I often participated in the drills and one day during a 3-on-2, 2-on-1 fastbreak drill, I broke into the open court and the kids always loved seeing me dunk, so I was winding up to finish with a flush.

Unfortunately, the group that had completed the drill just before me was lingering beneath the basket, but it was too late to adjust. I either had to plow over a bunch of kids and dunk it, or lay it up and salvage everyone involved. Obviously, I railed it. I knocked over six players like bowling pins and sprained my ankle worse than any other time of my life. I completely played it off though. I discreetly hobbled to the scorer's table and just pulled a "hey now I just want to watch you guys run this drill on your own". I was out for months after that. Good times.
