Default OT: Kramer talks w/Jesse Jackson; oh the irony

Michael Richards went on Jesse Jackson's radio show to discuss what he said and offer apologies.

Jackson has called Richards' words "hateful," "sick," and "deep-seated".

Oh the irony...Jesse Jackson commenting on others mischosen words....

Jesse Jackson is the man who called jews "hymies" and called New York "hymietown". He first denied it and then finally admitted it and apologized. Maybe Jesse ain't the man to judge others, eh?

Jesse Jackson is a community leader. Kramer is just a loose lipped comedian. Gee, who has a greater responsibility to choose his words properly....

Loose lipped comedian? Why didnt Richards hire you as his publicist so you could sell the nation "Kramer" not Richards said it as a comedian. They do have loose lips you know.

Problem with your problem is this...you're calling out irony when there really isnt any. Why? You're condemning Jesse Jackson from ever speaking out on people who use racial slurs. So now its off limits to the community leader because he used them himself. So he either cant comment unless he is sympathizing in a "I made the same mistake, I'll support you" kind of way.

Why cant Jesse speak on how he feels as well as others about what Richards said without someone pulling out the "But you said this..." card?

both are jokes. I don't know if Jesse Jackson has been taking seriously by anyone in the Afro American community since 96.

That said, the 2 black people are suing Michael Richards. First I thought no chance, 1st amendment rights, but California actually does have a precedent for a case like this called the hate crimes law which refers to language which could incite violence or illegal activity from a reasonably person. However, it harms their case IMO the fact they responded in kind calling him a cracker. The 2 guys seemed very naive to the whole situation, their lawyer was obviously calling all the shots. I wouldn't doubt she was the one who approached them volunteering to take the case in some attempt to get her name out there.

I'll get the link and youtube videos in a second, gotta find them

I'm not defending Michael Richards, I'm just saying Jesse Jackson being the one to say "shame on you" is pretty comical.

Agreed. Bringing up past statements is just a sad excuse to defend Richards racist comments, which were clearly in his mind before he got mad.

No one is defending Richards statements, but Jesse Jackson lecturing someone on improper language is funny, eh?

It's like OJ Simspon commenting on another celebrity murder with "tsk, tsk, tsk". I mean, come on.....

Here is the Youtube link to them talking about it on the Today Show. Their lawyer's recommendation is strange, seems like they're not exactly suing but taking him to court for the case to be judged by an x judge. Here is the fighting words doctrine I spoke of that will be the precedent they likely try to point to.
Quote:
Fighting words doctrine. The First Amendment doctrine that holds that certain utterances are not constitutionally protected as free speech if they are inherently likely to provoke a violent response from the audience. N.A.A.C.P. v. Clairborne Hardware Co., Miss., 458 U.S. 886, 102 S.Ct. 3409, 73 L.Ed.2d 1215 (1982). Words which by their very utterance inflict injury or tend to incite an immediate breach of the peace, having direct tendency to cause acts of violence by the persons to whom, individually, remark is addressed. The test is what persons of common intelligence would understand to be words likely to cause an average addressee to fight. City of Seattle v. Camby, 104 Wash.2d 49, 701 P.2d 499, 500.

The "freedom of speech" protected by the Constitution is not absolute at all times and under all circumstances and there are well-defined and narrowly limited classes of speech, the prevention and punishment of which does not raise any constitutional problem, including the lewd and obscene, the profane, the libelous, and the insulting or "fighting words" which by their very utterance inflict injury or tend to incite an immediate breach of the peace. Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire, 315 U.S. 568, 62 S.Ct. 766, 86 L.Ed. 1031.

Would you say it's more than improper language to say that "Fifty years ago we'd have you upside down with a f****** fork up your a**."

You didn't hear Jesse Jackson saying a comment about killing jews in the holocaust did you?

I'm not judging the who is worse or get into that game. It's irrelevant. Just commenting that Jesse Jackson lecturing someone on improper speech is funny.

If you want to play that game, do we really care what a washed up comedian says in a late night comedy club or a community and political leader that can influence the thoughts of millions of his constitutents.

But it's irrelevant. Jesse Jackson's career rolled right along after his comments too....whatever....
