Default Trade Scenario: NJ/DEN/POR/NOH - Melo and Paul Unite

Denver trades:
Melo, Harrington, Balkman, Sh.Williams
for
Favors, Murphy, Babbitt, Q.Ross, GS #1, $3m Cash NJ, $7m TPE

Billups / Lawson / Carter
JR Smith / Forbes / Ross
Afflalo / Babbitt
Murphy / Favors / K.Martin
Nene / Andersen / Ely

-Slight variation on "standing offer" with Babbit instead of a pick, and greater savings
-Babbit and Favors could be long term F combo
-$17m in savings from salary/tax/cash

NOH trades:
Paul, Okafor, A.Gray
for
B.Lopez, A.Miller, Pryzbilla, A.Harrington, LAL #1, HOU #1, $3m Cash NJ, $4m TPE

A.Miller / J.Jack / Banks
Bellinelli / Thorton / W.Green
Ariza / Harrington / Poindexter
D.West / Ja.Smith / Mbenga
Lopez / Pryzbilla / Andersen

-Massive short-term and long term savings
-Miller, Pryzbilla expirers. Harrington 3 years/$27m guaranteed vs. 4/52 for Okafor
-Center of future
-Loads up on picks
-Recent results of team could frustrate Paul leading to trade demands

POR trades
A.Miller, Pryzbilla, Babbit
for
Harris, Outlaw, A.Gray, Balkman, MIA #2, $3m Cash NJ

Harris / Mills / A.Johnson
Roy / Fernandez / E.Williams
W.Matthews / Batum / Balkman
Aldridge / Outlaw / Cunningham
Camby / Marks / Gray / Oden

-Grants Roy his wish for a "faster" PG
-Gets Mr. 4th quarter back who can create his own shot in Outlaw
-Adds depth upfront
-Gets cash to make up salary difference

NJN trades
Favors, Lopez, Murphy, Harris, Outlaw, Q.Ross
2012 GS #1, 2011 LAL #1, 2012 HOU #1, 2012 MIA #2, $9m Cash
for
Paul, Melo, Okafor, Sh.Williams

Paul / Farmar / Uzoh
Morrow / Vujacic
Melo / D.James / Graham
Humphries / Sh.Williams
Okafor / Petro

-Sells soul for an instant playoff team
-Would rely on MLE, #1 and future moves to improve depth next season

Er... which of these teams has a trade exception to use in this deal? I was always under the impression that a TPE could only be created in a sign and trade deal (I could always be wrong, never been 100% fluent with the mess that is the current CBA)

I'm not sure who has them now, but NJ is taking on an extra $9m in salary which they can do, due to the large amount they are sending out.

As a result, NOH and Denver automatically create trade exceptions for themselves they could use later, since they are sending out more salary than they are getting back.

Ultimately NJ wold hope to have a team like this going into next season:

2011-2012 NJ Nets
Chris Paul / Jordan Farmar / Ben Uzoh*
Anthony Morrow / Sasha Vujacic* / #1
Carmelo Anthony / Damion James
MLE / Kris Humphries* / Sheldon Williams*
Emeka Okafor / Johan Petro / #2

*resigned
MLE targets = G.Davis, K.Martin, N.Collison, Landry, AK47, T.Murphy (lol), etc.

Depending on when this trade is made, their pick very well could be lottery, since this season is slipping away the longer they wait.

From feedback on other sites, Portland seems to be on board.

From Denver's perspective, the standing offer that both sides like (Murphy, Favors, 2 #1's) has been held up by Melo's reluctance to extend until there are better players around him. This satisfies Melo and trumps the standing offer, since Denver sheds Harrington's and Balkman's contracts, gets a large trade exception, cash and Luke Babbitt. The trade off being they lose a second #1.

From NOH's perspective, the premise is
a. The team in coming down to earth and bot even a .500 team since their hot start
b. Paul may ask out
c. They may anticipate losing Paul in 2012 and dealing with this next season.
d. The team may look to shed major salary in anticipation of a rebuild or sale to a private party, and not the NBA.

Really the only team I would worry about here is NOH, which I realize is a reach, but based upon some realities at the same time.

Denver does it because they need to get rid of Anthony,New Jersey benefits from trade,Portland stays the same (maybe a little better) and New Orleans is a total loser in this trade.

I can't see this happening,Paul isn't leaving New Orleans for some sh*t.
He becomes free-agent in 2012. but they can get much more next year than they will get with this deal.

In which case NOH gets cut out, and most of the pieces go to NJ, except for Sheldon Williams who could go to Portland if they want.

Andre Miller / Jordan Farmar / Ben Uzoh
Anthony Morrow / Sasha Vujavic
Carmelo Anthony / Damion James / Stephan Graham
Al Harrington / Kris Humphries
Brook Lopez / Johan Petro / Joel Pryzbilla
+
LAL #1 & HOU #1 back

I would take that team too.

Also if they have to deal with this next year, how much more value would Paul have than Melo?

If based upon the standing offer:

Melo = Favors, Murphy, 2 #1's

is it fair to say:

Paul = Lopez, A.Miller, Pryzbilla, 2 #1's, $3m Cash
+
Okafor = Harrington + $4m Trade Exception and long term savings

?

Well they surely can get something better.
Lopez = Okafor

It's like they get veteran Miller, veteran Harrington and a Pryzbilla for Paul.
They should at least try to get some young talent for Chris Paul, also it is not sure that he won't resign.

We're talking about value in trades, not production.
There is no way a 28 y/o Center owed $52m over 4 years has the same value as a 22 y/o C on a rookie deal.
