Default Has there ever been a 'rating' thread instead of a ranking one?

Almost all of us are obsessed with ranking the all-time greats. And I wanted to try something else.

I wonder what will it be like. Just like a video game ratings.
Offense - Defense - Rebounding - Overall
These 4 are the most basic criterias there are.

Just think of an all-time great at its best.

Shall we begin? Anyone interested in?

1st Number = Offense
2nd Number = Defense
3rd Number = Rebounding
4th Number = Overall(sum)

1. Shaq: 10-8-10-28
1b.Wilt: 10-8-10-28
3. Hakeem: 8-9-10-27
4. Duncan: 7-9-10-26
5. LeBron: 9-9-7-25
6. Jordan: 9-9-6-24
7. Bird: 10-6-7-23
8. Kareem: 7-7-8-22
9. Dirk: 10-3-7-20
10. Russell: 1-10-9-20
11. Magic: 9-3-5-17
12. Kobe: 7-6-3-16

Cool thread idea. I don't think you can weight reboinding as much as offense, maybe 1/2 as much (meaning o/d are on a 0-10 scale, r on a 0-5 scale). IMO then, you'll get some decent overalls (offense biased towards smalla, defense/rebounding biased towards bigs). Something like (just some off-the-cuff numbers):

Jordan - 10/5/1 = 15
Russell - 5/10/5 = 20
Shaq - 10/7/3 = 20
Bird - 10/4/3 = 17
Magic - 10/2/2 = 14
Pippen - 6/7/2 = 15
Oscar - 10/1/2 = 13

Actually, this is still problematic (MJ for instance is underrated). I see two fixes:

1) Rate bigs/smalls on separate scales
2) Limit the contribution bigs can make on offense as non-ball-handlers

I do not think it wouldn't be simple accumulation as for overall. You just give the point what feels right for you in your opinion.

Also I was thinking we should give the points out of 100. 100 should be given to best there is.

Example;
David Robinson; Offense 84 - Defense 91 - Rebounding 86, Overall 85
Patrick Ewing; Offense 86 - Defense 89, Rebounding 85, Overall 86

From this example you should think about their acutal play instead of what you gave them for off-def-reb while giving their overall rating.
When you compared their best seasons, other than assist numbers, their numbers are pretty similar but Ewing was the better playoff performer and that's why his overall rating should be higher.

I tried to be clear enough what it should be like.

What about rating intangibles? attitude? Toughness? Leadership? ... Since we all know basketball, think it would be cool to add some of those. If I'm not mistaken, even current bball video games have some semblance of a "clutch rating".

I just wanted to keep it simple with the most basic 3 criterias. If we consider all of these things (intangibles, skillset, crunch time performances) too seperately, it'll be too tough to do it. The criterias you mentioned are the exact same reasons why I gave Ewing to 86 and DRob to 85. But considering of them while giving overall rating is much more useful and easier I'd say.

Can you give your four ratings for some other players? The more the better. I want to see something.

If we are talking about overall rating everything (even the basketball IQ, clutch, and intangibles BS) than top 5 in the NBA:

LeBron James - 96
Kobe Bryant - 93
Kevin Durant - 93
Derrick Rose - 92
Chris Paul - 90

Current Kobe, as in injured Kobe? If you mean healthy, that is a joke.

11-12 KOBE

19 players had their career high on the might they played the lakers this year.

11 of them were shooting guards lol

Kobe was once great defensively

LeBron is a great defender. 93 is fair

I'm curious as to why you didn't give Hakeem a 10 for defense.
