Default Miami Hurricanes hire Al Golden (Temple coach)

http://ncaafootball.fanhouse.com/201...mi-hurricanes/

Quote:
Al Golden will be the new football coach at the University of Miami, according to multiple reports.

A source told The Associated Press that the deal is believed to be for at least four years and worth up to $8 million for the 41-year-old Golden.

Golden led Temple to 17 wins in the last two seasons, improving a school that went 1-11 in his first campaign. The Owls were 8-4 this season but were not invited to a bowl game.

The University of Pittsburgh also reportedly offered Golden its head coaching job and, up until Sunday night, Golden was contemplating where he would end up.

Golden has earned a reputation as a passionate recruiter, strong motivator and a man who prides himself on players' performance in academics.

Golden will replace Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon, who was fired after the Hurricanes (7-5) finished with a loss to South Florida.
Gonna miss ya Al

I'd assumed he was going to stay at Temple until Paterno retired then take over State.

It's not a terrible hire. Like it's already been said, a lot of people thought he might be the next Penn State coach once JoePa retired. Golden has done a good job at Temple.

However, you would think Miami might be able to land a little more well known commodity.

Pretty much the point of my post. Unless the guys they've contacted had no interest in the U job.

The U has been interested in this guy for a while. He was mentioned a lot before their last hire. I think he'll do well.

Golden never beat a MAC team with a winning record. Just food for thought.

Temple had the worst D-1 football program when he inherited the team.

They beat a UConn team that won the Big East and is headed to a BCS bowl. Weakest BCS team? Sure. But the Big East ain't the MAC.

It's a little unfair to rip him for never taking out a winning MAC team when there are usually only 4 or so a year in a 13 team conference. Plus, the MAC is strange with the way they schedule b/c of the odd number. Temple didn't even play every team in their own division in '09.

And it looks like Vandy just hired Malzahn from Auburn.

Don't know a ton about Golden but it just seems like an underwhelming hire to me. If I had to pick which school made the more impressive hire, I would pick Vandy over Miami right now.

But the results will play out on the field.

Considering that they were trying to get Gruden, this doesn't seem like a good hire.

It will be very interesting to see if Malzahn can get the type of athletes at Vandy to run his offense. I'm from the same area of Arkansas as Malzahn and have followed his career dating back to his days as a high school coach at a powerhouse Northwest Arkansas private school. I've always thought he had a brilliant offensive mind. I hated the way Houston Nutt and Frank Broyles treated him his one year as Arkansas' offensive coordinator for a year. I'm glad he's finally got a head coaching gig, I just wish he would have waited it out for a better job than Vandy. He's going to have to have several 6-8 win seasons there if he wants to take another step up for his next head coaching job, and winning games at Vandy is no small feat. I wish him the best of luck because he's definitely going to need it.

As a U guy, I love the Golden hire. I wanted no part of most of the named candidates. The guy should be able to coach up the good talent that he was left with. I also hope he is not beholden to Jacory Harris, and ends the Harris Era at QB. He makes Brock Berlin look like Gino Torretta.
