Actually jazz came first. Then the Blues was derived later, when guys began to add to the jazz scale. Unless your talking about country, before jazz, because most people call that the blues, but many experts agree that the blues came AFTER jazz.
Jazz music, was ultimately the product of the New Orlean's melting pot of the late 1920's. With blues and ragtime music being so popular,a more "commercial" form of music called jazz came to be, alot like blues but missing was the religious tenor and soulful crooning. Jazz is the more commercial blues, without its core characteristics.
My whole mother's side of the family is Louisiana. So splitting hairs will do you no good.
