Default Bobcats draft Kemba Walker, trade for Bismack Biyombo

The Charlotte Bobcats selected Kemba Walker with the 9th overall pick in the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft. The team also acquired Bismack Biyombo, the 7th overall pick, from the Sacramento Kings in a three-team trade. As part of the deal, Charlotte received Corey Maggette from Milwaukee in exchange for the 19th overall pick (Tobias Harris), Stephen Jackson and Shaun Livingston. The Bobcats later traded the draft rights to Jeremy Tyler, the 39th overall pick, to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for cash considerations.

An early entry candidate, Walker (6-1, guard) led the University of Connecticut to the 2011 NCAA Championship and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. He also earned the Bob Cousy Award as the nation’s top point guard and was a top-five finalist for the Wooden and Naismith Awards. In 111 career collegiate games, he averaged 16.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.7 steals in 32.9 minutes. He also set a school single-season record with 965 points in 2010-11.

Last season, Walker averaged 23.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 37.6 minutes. He totaled two double-doubles, one triple-double and scored 20 or more points in 27 contests. He set a career high with 12 assists against Bucknell on March 17, in the NCAA Tournament.

Biyombo (6-9, forward) was an international early-entry candidate from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was a member of the World Select Team that competed in the Nike Hoop Summit this year in Portland, where he recorded the only triple-double in the event’s history against the U.S. Junior Select team with 12 points, 11 rebounds and a Summit-record 10 blocked shots.

Last season, Biyombo appeared in 28 games for two different Spanish League teams, Fuenlabrada and C.B. Illescas. In 14 games with Fuenlabrada, he averaged 6.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks, while connecting on .552 from the field. In 14 games with C.B. Illescas, he averaged 9.0 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.9 blocks and connected on .588 of his field goal attempts.

His best game last season included a career-high 28 points on 12-15 shooting from the field with 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals against Juventud as a member of C.B. Illescas.

A 6-6 forward, Maggette was selected by Seattle with the 13th pick in the 1999 NBA Draft before having his draft rights traded to Orlando. In 777 NBA games with Orlando, Los Angeles Clippers, Golden State and Milwaukee, he holds career averages of 16.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists. During the 2010-11 season, Maggette scored his 12,000th career point, played in his 750th career game and passed Jack Sikma for 50th place in NBA history for free throws made (4,391). In 67 games last season, he averaged 12.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists.

I love these picks!

And what a trade eh? For the first time I feel like we hands down won a trade! I'm already thinking the Cho hire was one of this franchise's best decisions ever!

For the first time in a year I'm coming back to being an optimist about this team.

So where does Maggette fit in? A veteran with stats that don't come close to Stephen Jackson's. And what about his attitude? Is he a sour apple that ruins the whole crate?

I've never liked the guy, mainly because he's a chucker, low BBIQ and he's crap on D. From what I've read tho he doesn't complain (even after Skiles benched him end of last season in Milwaukee) and he's somewhat religious. I don't see him being a locker room issue.

We need points AND we need to not win so many games. Maggette will help with both of those. He's certainly not the player we traded for him...but for our situation I think he'll do pretty well.

I'm confused. Are you saying that we need to lose more games and that Maggette will help us with that?

Yes.

Without Magette, we may score 60-70 points a game. With Magette, we'll at least average in the mid-80s. Therefore, he gives us points, but with such low numbers, we won't win many games.

I'm disappointed the Bobcats took Kemba Walker. I was hoping he would be drafted by a Western Conference team, it would've been easier to cheer for him. He's been one of my favorite college players since he arrived at UCONN. He's going to do just fine on the NBA level

Yeah. Adding to what Timmeh said he also won't contribute to team play (on both sides of the ball), so he's going to be somewhat frustrating...but he's going to help the cause of getting a better pick in a draft supposedly comparable to 2003.

It's going to be a tough year. As Cho said we're going to have to take a step back to move forward...and I've never ever wanted to lose any game. At least now we've picked up a couple of promising assets to hang our hat on.

10.2/10.9...approx. 2 million more than we owed Jax and the same amount of years (2).

He lost bigtime value in Milwaukee...not that he ever had stellar value. With us not in "win now" and not having a Scott Skiles (or Larry Brown, as they both love defense above all else) I think we can up his value and possibly even get an asset at the deadline or the next season when he's an expiring.

BTW, because we added Liv in we still had a net salary savings in the trade (love that trade!).

Cool. How much do you think we'll have for FA in 2012?

Per DX we're around 29 million for 2012. That should be close; we lost about 2 million in the trade but we add the rookie contracts.

Assuming the new CBA is going to be at least similar in regards to acquiring FAs that should put us in very good shape.

Drafting Kemba and trading for Bismack seems like pretty solid moves.

Bismack is clearly a project, but his upside is huge defensively. Very athletic player. Could be hte next ben, could be a bust. Thats the risk you take with projects but you gotta gamble if you are a team like the Cats. Losing Jax hurts, but with or without him, Cats were going no where. I think they did as well as they could for an aging guy like Jax.

Maggette is a class act and does not complain about his role on teams. He isnt the smartest player, but he can get to the line and put up points. He is only there for short term help anyways.
