Default Re: The 2011 Draft Prospect Thread

just noticed that late last month "net income" wrote a nice article evaluating billy king's ability as a drafter and as a GM. in essence, the kind of article i would have liked to have written, had i the time and the skill.

here's a couple excerpts, plus the link:
Quote:
Even the best GM makes mistakes in the draft, of course. Joe Dumars took Darko Milicic and Sam Presti traded Roddy Beaubois for Byron Mullens. Billy King made a few too, but a review of King's time in Philly indicates he did well when picking in the lottery, found solid NBA players at the end of the first round and discovered value deep into the second. He also signed at least one undrafted player, Raja Bell, who became a top-notch defender.

His best skill is finding value late and with the Nets having a late first rounder and an early second rounder, that's a good thing. As one of his former players in Philly, Eric Snow, told Al Iannazzone last summer, "Hes got a great feel for the unseen."
Quote:
A GM who can find any value after #40 (MacColluch, Green, Korver and Williams...Korver and Greene in the same draft); get solid NBA talents late in the first round (Claxton, Dalembert, Salmons); and use lottery picks to get players like Iguodala and Young deserves respect.

...

Billy King is a tinkerer. He absolutely loves to deal on Draft Night. As a Sixers' executive, King made 14 draft-day trades from 1998-2007 that involved picks. On three Draft Nights, he made three deals...in 2002, 2006 and 2007.

It is offical Im the captain of the Marshon Brooks bandwagon. But sadly Im starting to think he wont make it to the Nets. His stock is shooting up right now. Watching the draft combine now and they are going nuts about him. He is killing these drills.

I hope we can snatch Brooks, hes a great slasher and can bring offense to this team but his defense worries me.

While King has a pretty good track record of drafting... How good is Avery Johnson at developing rookies? Or young talent in general?

Why would his defense worry you? With his size and wingspan he matches up well when it comes guarding the 2. Plus dude average 7 rebounds or something light that. So he is a banger in the paint also.

He did a good job turning Devin Harris into a pointguard. Marquis Daniels. And Josh Howard were young bucks when he coached The Mavericks.

Here is a good question. Who would you rather draft and why, Marshon Brooks or Klay Thompson?

For my money they are the best SG in this draft.

Brooks has a good wingspan but his perimeter defense is not the brightest, but ill still take him.
BTW this sounds far-fetched but can we move up in the draft and get Kanter?
He had a meeting with the Nets yesterday.

I don't see how we can possibly move up into the top 5, I know this years draft is bad and next years is loaded but I just don't see it happening. However it's nice to know that he's interested in our organization and we could have a very great chance of getting him when he becomes a free agent after his rookie contract.

Yea I dount we move that close in the draft. Brooks is growing his stock higher and higher. He is predicted to go #17. If we don't move up Kyle Singler is likely coming to the Nets

With the word athlete being thrown around by the Nets and Marshon Brooks looking less likely to being a Net.Iman Shumpert is my next choice. I love his defense and love his size for the SG. He needs to be told PG is not his position right away.So he can just focus on one aspect of his offensive game.

Iman is talented and can become a very good defensive shooting guard who can score some. His problem is consistency. He's very erratic and his shot is very streaky. He's also incredibly turnover prone. I like him enough to be ok with drafting him, but if E'Twaun Moore is there, I'd prefer him. Though I think we can get him in the 2nd round.

Brooks twisted his ankle. That just may push him back down the rankings.
