I got pretty worked up the first time they did this when I was in high school before the '97 re-releases, but I've gotten over it. From what I've read it sounds pretty minor.

I haven't bought any in a while so I'm due, plus there's a lot of good releases coming out, I think my next batch will be:

the Conversation $17.99
Pulp Fiction $12.99 [steal for the quality]
the Outlaw Josey Wales BD book $22.99
Animal Kingdom $20.49
Dazed and Confused [Criterion collection] $27.99

total: about $102

I'll be making two very large BD purchases this month. There are quite a few Criterion releases I'm going to get. Barnes & Noble is having a 50% off sale on Criterion up until the 21st. I can't wait for Black Friday because if there aren't any Criterion sales on Amazon then I'll end up paying over $300 instead of about $205 which what they are with the sale.

So for my first order, all of them from the Criterion collection:

Carlos
Days Of Heaven
Fear and Loathing
Hunger
the Last Emperor
Naked
Paris, Texas
Playtime
Repulsion
Videodrome

$205

I might get something else instead of Playtime though, not sure I'll have to think about it. I have about 70 other BD's on my wishlist for Black Friday and Christmas.

Have you watched these yet? All three of the ones you haven't seen are great movie experiences.

Blood Simple is a great little crime movie. Fantastic Neo-noir.
Raising Arizona is pure lunacy.
Miller's Crossing is one of my favorites. Stylized 30's gangster movie based on the same Dashiell Hammet book that Kurosawa's Yojimbo is based on.

I think I will have to add that collection to my christmas list. I just looked to see which of them I had on DVD...I knew I had Fargo...thought I had Miller's Crossing, but I can't find it and I found Raising Arizona and more important found an unopened copy of Wings of Desire that I got for my birthday and thought I lost.

Just threw in Raising Arizona on DVD and I may have to wait for the Blu Ray. It's been a while since I've seen it and it's got me already with just five minutes in

My collection so far:

the Assassination of Jesse James...
Band of Brothers box-set
the Exorcist [extended + theatrical]
Inception
Leon [directors cut + theatrical]
the Shining
Raging Bull
the Town [extended]
Unforgiven

My next order will be:

Taxi Driver
Black Swan
Godfather collection
and a fourth to be named later, not really sure yet

So what does your collection look like? How often do you buy them?
I've been considering getting a ps3 instead of an xbox for the blu-ray player.

I love Sony products I have 2 of their mp3 players, a dvd player and a radio so that's a plus but my dvd collection is all standard.

Is the picture quality really worth starting a new collection so to speak?

In a nut shell yes.

I only replace the DVDs I have with Blu rays if I consider them to be outstanding films that I will watch fairly often.

Good Will Hunting is also now added to my collection.

Seriously thinking of getting a ps3 in lieu of an xbox now.

I finally ended up getting a blu-ray player a couple of weeks ago. I love it so far. best thing about it is the USB hookup. I have 2 terabyte hard-drive where I have a 720 and 1080 mkv files watching it through the player.

The PS3 is actually a very, very good blu-ray player....you can stream Netflix through it as well.

If you want to watch movies, on it, it helps to get the playstation blu ray remote, which makes everything easier than the playstation controller.

I think the Xbox used have a much bigger advantage in terms of games when they first started, but that's not the case anymore. Developers have really unlocked the power of the PS3 now....(I think it was easier initially to develop for Xbox.)
