You think he has a "great jumpshot"? Maybe in the past but have you been watching any Hawks games this season? They really need to get rid of Joe Johnson and his contract and Marvin Williams and his waste of a #3 overall pick. He wasn't even a starter on his college team! Why should he be a starter on the Hawks? At the most, he should be coming off the bench with a much lower contract. If Joe Johnson really wants to win, he needs to do what Lebron James, Chris Bosh and even Mike Bibby did and take less money to be able to use that money to make the team better.
Re: should the Hawks trade Joe Johnson this offseason
no they shouldnt
the way i look at it is, its better to bet close to contending, then be in position to pull a move that takes you to contantion than keep rebiulding until you make a great pick in like 2 or 3 drafts in a row.
everybody thinks you need to tank to be good, ask minnesota how thats going, atlanta fans should enjoy playoff basketball and a team that wins more games than it loses, you cant have everything. everybody wants to sontend when really only like 4 or 5 teams are in that position, you dont wanna spend 7 years hoping the pieces fall in the right position and nobody leaves in FA and the team sucking while you rebuild rather than have a playoff team that one of those years might get lucky and make the conference finals.

why would the hawks want to trade johnson? if they trade jj they are still gonna be a fringe playoff team, not getting any good draft picks, they would drift further toward nba purgatory by trading joe johnson

I disagree. Building a team takes a long-term plan, and the Hawks obviously didn't have one when they gave out that contract. During last years playoffs it was obvious this team will never contend without adding at least 1 more difference-maker. So why commit to pay a player max for 6 years and bring your payroll up above $70 mil when the furthest he can take your team to the 2nd round?
I feel a team should either 1) be contending, at which time money should be no object for the team, or 2) keeping the payroll low and flexibility high by acquiring young relatively inexpensive talent that can fit around any star.
Re: should the Hawks trade Joe Johnson this offseason
Well, he has a horrible contract and he's choked big time in the playoffs the last 2 years plus he's 29 turning 30. Josh Smith was better than him in 2010, IMO and both Smith and Horford have arguably been better this year.
With that being said, he could fit in great next to Dwight because he could be a 2nd option and give Howard a 20 ppg scorer who is also a playmaker. It'd make Turkoglu kind of useless though so they'd have to get rid of him and they already have Gilbert's horrible contract which is worse than Johnson's.
Re: should the Hawks trade Joe Johnson this offseason
Joe Johnson will be nearly impossible to move. Perhaps the only way is if they attach Al Horford to the deal too. After that, they can try and deal Josh Smith for picks.
This team has no hope with its current structure. They are stuck with perennial mediocrity, which is fine if the organization is okay with it. If the Hawks ever want to improve, they'll need to blow up the whole thing and go to zero.

interesting...
I think the Mavs would rather keep Marion and S&T Butler to Atlanta in that situation though. I really don't think his contract is bad at all. He has basically morphed into a smaller, more athletic Lamar Odom sans the 3 point shot.
