Default Re: 2011 NBA Draft

Last but not least, Enes Kanter will meet with the Utah Jazz on Friday in Chicago. The Jazz have a few different directions they could go. They would like a point guard, which would be between Kemba Walker and Brandon Knight, but they also would be happy if Derrick Williams was available at No. 3. If Williams is gone, would the Jazz take Kanter? It's too early to tell, but we might have a better idea after Friday's meeting between Kanter and the Jazz. The Hoops Report

In a strange meeting of future position need and possible past relationship, Utah will likely have the chance to select Jan Vesely, a player compared to Kirilenko, with the intention of having him replace Kirilenko. This is too good on intrigue alone, even with the Jazz barely into the serious decision-making process. They could take center Enes Kanter or point guard Brandon Knight with the third selection -- both are realistic calls for the franchise trying to reclaim its status as playoff regular -- but No. 3 is Vesely range too. Some teams believe he will turn out to be the best of the five players from Europe (or who played on the continent this season) to make the top 10 on June 23. "He has a lot of the qualities of Kirilenko with a more durable body," one executive said. NBA.com

Former BYU guard Jimmer Fredette and ex-Connecticut guard Kemba Walker are scheduled to work out June 15 for the Jazz, a league source said Monday. The duo could be joined by former Kentucky guard Brandon Knight. Salt Lake Tribune

The Utah Jazz are currently trying to organize a workout on June 15 that could include Walker, Knight and Jimmer Fredette. Walker rescheduled his workout with the Sacramento Kings, originally scheduled for Thursday, for June 13. The Hoops Report

Two teams actively trying to trade down are the Utah Jazz and Cleveland Cavaliers, according to sources. The Cavs have been telling agents they are actively trying to acquire a draft pick in the 10-19 range, which is why certain player with no chance of being picked in the top four are coming to Cleveland for workouts. The No. 1 and No. 4 picks are the Cavs' only first round picks. This would certainly be an option if they believe Derrick Williams and Enes Kanter will both be gone in the top three picks. The Jazz are exploring every option, especially trading down from the No. 3 pick. The Hoops Report

Tomorrow, five teams (Toronto, Detroit, Utah, Charlotte and Golden State) are going to Spain to watch Bismack Biyombo conduct a private workout, but Washington is not among them, according to Givony. Bullets Forever

According to Jonathan Givony of Draft Express, the Wizards have joined Toronto and Utah to watch Jan Vesely in the Serbian League Finals prior to the camp. (As to who, specifically, my understanding is Ernie Grunfeld is back here watching the workouts at Verizon Center and assistant GM Tommy Sheppard is in Italy. Also, Michael Lee says we should "keep an eye" on the Vesely thing). Bullets Forever

Brian T. Smith: Keep hearing question marks about Knight, Kanter, Walker. Constant praise about Vesely, though. "He's the real deal." Twitter

sources say the Kentucky point guard could be risking his chance to go third overall to Utah by refusing to work out against competition. Knight has an open invitation to join Connecticut's Kemba Walker, BYU's Jimmer Fredette and UCLA's Malcolm Lee in a June 15 workout with the Jazz, but sources close to both sides said he has yet to decide whether to take part. SI.com

What's more, there are rumblings that Utah is less than thrilled at the notion that Knight would even consider dictating the terms with the No. 3 pick (although Turkish center Enes Kanter already did just that in his Jazz workout in Chicago in which Toronto also took part). It's unclear whether the Jazz would take a hard-line stance and refuse to take Knight unless he worked out against other top-line competitors, but that appears to be a possibility. SI.com

This is a business. Teams don't feel bad when they use that mantra, so don't expect players to. Knight is doing whats best for himself at this point. He doesn't even have a team right now, he owes no loyalties at this point.

If they pass on Knight over this, they are stupid. They don't need Kanter and Kemba isn't what they need. Knight has an incredible work ethic and willingness to learn and change. He has the size, length and athleticism to guard the Westbrook/Rose/DWill/Paul types, he has not only a great shooting stroke but a willingness and eagerness to take shots late in games. His PG game needs work, but he is a pretty solid natural passer and ball handler as well as a leader. He is the Pg they need right now. If Minny some how takes Kanter, then they shoudl take DerrickWilliams easy, but do not pass on Knight due to anything stupid.

They don't? He's a huge upgrade from Fessenko.

Him, Knight and Vesely all sound pretty intriging to me as does trading down.

I don't see him as replacing Fesenko. Fesenko is your 5th big. You don't draft a 5th big #3 overall. Even if Okur can't play and he's your #4, its still stupid.
Not to mention its hard enough trying to play simialr players in Milsap and Jefferson together. Now you want to throw another similar guy in the mix? No way, no how.

Agreed, only way I see 'em taking Kanter is if they've got another trade in the works, either for Kanter, or for Jefferson of Millsap.

I would say trading down to Sacremento at #7, so Sac can draft Knight who'll give them a legit PG and then Utah take Vesley at #7, but it does seem that Toronto are a legit shot to take him at #5 or the Wizards at #6.

Let's hope not. Let's hope he's done in Utah.

They say they're taking the best player available though O'Conner is generally full of it. It was stupid for Portland not to take MJ when they already had Drexler. To me he gives you two very young and talented bigs so if you think he and Favors can play together in the future you certainly consider it.

Jefferson, Okur and Fessenko need to go. Milsap could be playing some 3. Not a whole lot of 270 + pound big guys with skills around. The Jazz certainly haven't had them.

I'm hearing the Utah Jazz really like Brandon Knight but aren't sure if they want him at No. 3 or to trade down. The interest may not be mutual from Brandon Knight, but he will reportedly be in Utah on Thursday for a private workout. We'll see how Knight and the Jazz feel about each other after that. Even though the Jazz like Knight, they still might draft Enes Kanter as the best player available and look to trade. The Hoops Report

The Jazz are actively looking for a trade partner at No. 4, No. 5 or No. 6. The problem is that those teams aren't sure Kanter will be gone before then if the Jazz pass on him. A Wizards trade makes sense with the Jazz, but the Wizards think Kanter may slip to them and they'd still be happy with a few other guys. It's not that Brandon Knight doesn't want to play for the Jazz. Knight just isn't convinced yet that the Jazz are the best fit for him. The Hoops Report

The Jimmer Fredette-Kemba Walker showdown is set.
It didn't happen in Sacramento as once planned, but both hyped players and lottery prospects will participate against each other in a pre-draft workout for the Utah Jazz on Wednesday morning.

The NCAA Tournament spotlight-stealing point guards will be joined in the tryout session by 6-8 forward Paul Carter (Illinois-Chicago), 6-10 forward Josh Harrellson (Kentucky), 6-2 guard Senario Hillman (Alabama) and 6-6 guard Malcolm Lee (UCLA).

I agree to some degree, I just don't think Knight over Kanter is at all comparable. I think its pretty even so need starts to factor in. I think Jefferson will keep getting better a la Zach Randolph. He needs a defensive C next to him though, ideally an athletic type like Favors and he needs to not play C himself. If the think Kanter is that much better, then take him for sure. I don't see it though. Knight can be on Deron's level IMO, so its a great way to rebuild. Knight,Favors,Harris for Williams will be a steal in 2 yers.
