Default What happened to Durant's Buzz?

Last year the dude was like the third most popular player behind Kobe and Bron and was second (i think) in MVP and was talked about suprassing Lebron (this season) etc..etc.... But all season long I've heard jack about Durant.. No MVP discussion for him at all... no top 5 player or anything like that.. all this season hype is Lebron James, Heat, Kobe & Lakers, Derrick Rose, Dwight Howard, and Blake griffin..

what happened with Durant's Buzz?

Durant is the league's leading scorer. He's doing fine. The Thunder are a success. But Russell Westbrook is turning out to be just as important to the team as Durant is. Plus a few other individual stars are simply having slightly more impressive seasons. But Durant is still playing like a great young star.

cuz pepole were saying he would surpass lebron in the off season. NBA was saying he would be the clear cut MVP. GMS were saying they would start a team with him over lebron. Joyner was pushing the 35 ppg on 50/40/90. Then it turned out that he is nothing but a taller ray allen. Basically he failed to beat the hype.

As I said in my other post that got deleted, to a lot of fans its not just how you perform its how you perform relative to their expectations. When they saw Durant turn into the youngest scoring champ ever last year people expected him to make the leap to best player as well this year.

Unfortunatley thats not happened, but I'd argue he's still a better player than last year. If he keeps scoring at this level for 10 years of so he will retire as an all-time great scorer, and he is surrounded by good talent in Oklahoma City and a front office that seems to know how to build a team. Whether the casual fan realizes it or not, Durant is in a great position right now.

Better for OKC...

team has gotten better, another player has emerged into a prime time budding star.

Can only help them in the future.

Blake Griffin stole a bit of his "Thunder" ;)

I'm cool with that since Blake went to OU ( I graduated with him). Plus, people naturally are looking for new emerging players. And has others have mentioned Westbrook, Iblocka, Perkins etc.. have generated a lot of buzz. Next year another player besides Griffin will get all the buzz. I think KD and Blake would prefer to fly under the radar as much as possible.

He was popular among stats nerds who never watched him play, then they saw firsthand how boring he is in the playoffs and also they saw Westbrook takeover as Durant wilted.

I think next years young star is going to be Michael Beasley or John Wall probably both.

he has not been that consistent this year, much like lebron from year 3->4 where he declined in every statistic. however OKC is on pace to exceed expectations as they're probably going to win 56 or 57 games

Durant is playing for the team and helps them win games, he has matured enough not to interrupt the offensive flow by trying to win individual titles.

Media Hype doesn't hype small market areas as well.
This year there are better players to hype other than Kobe LeBron, Chicago's Derrick Rose, Blake Griffin, and there even whewing Melo just because he got in New York!
