Oasis is either 'Rock' or 'Brit Pop'. Nothing about their music suggests alternative, they are a classic rock and roll band if there ever was one.

True that... some of y'alls lists were good for a laugh. Thanks.

Anyways, some of my favorite alternative rock bands (I use the words "alternative rock" loosely; grunge rock falls in the same category to me):

(in a very rough order)

Sonic Youth
Pearl Jam
Nirvana
Smashing Pumpkins
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Stone Temple Pilots
R.E.M
Alice In Chains
Rage Against the Machine
Primus
Soundgarden
Butthole Surfers
Weezer
Dinosaur Jr.
Hole
The Presidents of the United States of America
Bush (their first album mostly)
Candlebox
Live
Silverchair
Sponge
Counting Crows

Needless to say, it's too hard to choose a "best ever" (and I'm sure I've even forgotten a bunch). Some made long strides spanning many years, others died off after the 90's yet were still 'significant'.

Rooney
Keane
OkGo
Dandy Warholes " Love this guy"

Good list... You want true alternative? The Violent Femmes and The Velvet Underground come to mind. Of course, I remember the days when Alternative actually meant alternative. You know, as in music that was different from the normal radio crap.

Obviously ACDC isn't alternative.

More to add to my list though

Oasis definitely--wonderwall and champagne supernova are good songs
Goo goo dolls- too many to name(slide, black balloon, iris)
Pink floyd
Rolling stones
journey
boston
some kiss stuff
Nirvana was good
Old green day- IM talking before they turned in to the punks they are now. "wake me up when september ends," more like "Wake me up when the song ends." I dont see why everyone liked that anyway.
Smashing pumpkins
Offspring
Train

And im starting to really like Jack Johnson. I wouldn't classify that as rock though. Maybe like a soft/mellow type of rock. If you guys haven't heard any of his stuff.. get to it. He's unbelievable.
