Rock in general, my list of personal favorites are:
A Perfect Circle
Jimmy Eat World
Beck
Lostprophets
Chevelle
Green Day (early stuff was the best)
Audioslave
Breaking Benjamin
Flogging Molly
Incubus
Silverstein
System of a Down
I like a lot of unknown Indie bands like Dandy Warhols, The Doves, Turin Brakes, The 88, and Keane.
Green Day isn't bad. Well, let me rephrase, Green Day never used to be bad. I was a big fan of them back in the day (Kerplunk, Dookie, Insomniac - all decent albums). Unfortunately, their music grew stale, and lacks that appeal they had in the 90's. "American Idiot" definitely blows.
Same with Offspring, was a big fan of them as well. Ignition (1992) and Smash (1994) were in my CD player alot, but after Ixnay on the Hombre they really started to suck. I pretty much gave up on them after, "Pretty Fly For a White Guy"... Wouldn't hold it against someone for liking them back in the day though.
Personally, although being decent bands in that same-ish time period, I don't consider either of them "alternative rock". More of an offshoot of punk and ska kind of stuff.
I can't believe noone has said VAN HALEN the greatest rock group of all times do you guy's not know your Rock Music, coz afterall what would the NBA have done without that JUMP song that's played in every arena of every game!

Nobody has said VH because they are not alternative...
and no you dont need to say more. You have embarrased yourself enough
Would you knock off your sh!t already? Green Day is one of the biggest bands in the world right now. Their collaboration with U2 (the OTHER biggest band in the world) has earned the groups another GRAMMY nomination. Where the FCUK is Oasis, the one hit wonders? Nothing but a bunch of Beatles rip-offs who dont even come close to being the best band out of the UK. Go ahead and name some songs by Oasis people know the melody to. The ones people will probably know by heart. Actually, I'll do you a fat favor.
Oasis:
Champagne Supernova
Wonderwall
Now its Green Day's turn:
Longview
Welcome to Paradise
Basketcase
When I Come Around
Brainstew
Geek Stink Breath
Walking Contradiction
Nice Guys Finish Last
Hitchin' A Ride
Redundant
Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)
Waiting
Minority
Holiday
Blvd of Broken Dreams
Wake Me Up When September Ends
Green Day completely SH!TS all over Oasis. Read that list and weep b/c everyone here can attest to the fact that Oasis was a one-hit wonder, while Green Day has been around for well over a decade. You should never mention those two in the same sentence again, especially with that inferiority complex of yours.

wow...you read my mind. they were actually really good back in the early-mid 90's.
You guys are really abusing the definition of alternative. Someone said Boston. Alternative music is Pixies, R.E.M., Television, Sonic Youth, even Nirvana, Radiohead. Green Day and Oasis are alternative, but barely. Neither are the best alternative band.
There's also some blind love. I'm actually fans of both Green Day and Oasis, but neither are exactly the most artistically credible bands of all-time. Oasis blatantly rips off the Beatles; Green Day, the Clash. The average person does not know the melody to Geek Stink Breath, Walking Contradiction, Nice Guys Finish Last, Hitchin' A Ride, Redundant. Live Forever or Supersonic are about as well known. It takes dedicated fans to really care about the lesser known hits.
