Given a circumstance where we don't know what the rest of the team looks like, who do you take?
Amare AND Melo?
Filling two positions with All-Star caliber players would be a solid foundation... but I can't help but think that having Howard alone brings you closer to the ultimate goal, regardless of who you put around him.
I'm a big fan of both Amar'e and Melo and I'm extremely happy they're Knicks.
But I'd have to chose Dwight Howard. He's just too dominant with the lack of bigs these days, and he's young.
Let's say we didn't sign Amar'e this past offseason and we traded the package we traded to Denver for Dwight (it's a scenario, I know the Magic wouldn't accept it you fcks). Oh, and fck you we would've kept Anthony Randolph since he would've gotten PT and Eddy Curry would've been kept since there wouldn't be a salary problem.
Toney Douglas / Roger Mason Jr
Landry Fields / Bill Walker / Andy Rautins
Shawne Williams / Derrick Brown
Anthony Randolph / Shawne Williams
Dwight Howard / Ronny Turiaf / Eddy Curry
Now that team would really suck. But we'd have a massive amount of cap space in the summer of 2011.
I don't think Melo and Amare compliment each other well. With those 2 on board you are financially strapped as well to improve your team. I don't know if I can see them leading to a team to the Finals unless Melo alters his game some and decides to actually try on defense. If he does, than maybe.
Any competent management (Otis Smith, I hate you) should be able to pair up Dwight with another promising player that compliments Dwight better than Amare/Melo do. I also think Dwight is easier to build around than Melo/Amare. You'll have more money to work with and the better player.
So with that said, I choose Dwight (shocker I know lol).
