Nearly the whole of Europe/North Africa/The Middle East was apart of the Roman Empire bro. Before the Arabs (Muslims) conquered Syria, there were many other peoples and armies that ruled over the region as well. Its always been a strategically important geo-political area fought over by opposing factions (Just as it is now)
. The original Syrian people are Semites
(Babylonians, Phoenicians, Assyrians) who were at one time or another ruled by foreigners like the Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines etc.
Arabs are also Semites
who experienced a similar history, only difference being they lived a little south of Syria (In Arabia). When Muhammad founded Islam he invaded Syria and brought along Islam and the Arabic language. Before this the Syrians were a majority Christian population who spoke Aramaic (Which was a similar language to Arabic anyway). Syria wasn't apart of the Roman Empire though, it was part of the much more powerful Eastern Byzantine Empire ruled from Constantinople (Modern day Istanbul).
Its because of the continual fighting and intrusion into Syria/Lebanon/Jerusalem that the Eastern Orthodox Christian Byzantine Empire invited Catholic Western Europe to come help them against the Muslims. This was what started the Crusades
Anyways back to pictures of hot girls.
