UFC 137 still has a great card.

Penn/Diaz is very interesting
Kongo/Mitrione is another interesting fight
Cro Cop/Nelson - Might be Cro Cop's last fight
#6 BW vs. Curran -Jorgensen usually has entertaining fights
#2 FW vs. Roop - Hioki is making his UFC debut. He might be the best Japanese fighter and it'll be interesting to see if he can have success over here, which others can't seem to have
Siver/Cerrone - Should be a war
Griffin/Palaszewski - Griffin could be on his way to FW title contention, though this is a step down from his last fight
Vera/Marshall - the return of Vera
Then you have some guys from TUF and some no-names

There's a lot of guys I'm interested in watching.

Nelson makes the epic beard man not so epic. Nick now looks like the identical twin of nate.

Winner of nelson/crocop should fight mark hunto.

4 ufc events in 4 weeks The merging of the wec and the buyout of strikeforce increased the ufc roster significantly. They can do events every week for an entire year or so if they want to.

can they really afford to, however?

revenue and salaries are a big part of this sport and PPV's have been down for the UFC this year. reflecting that reality, there's still a sizeable amount of pressure on every fighter to 1) win and 2) put on an entertaining fight, things that athletes in the major sports don't have to remotely worry about. on that note:

...

The Nevada State Athletic Commission released the info on fighter salaries for UFC 137 this morning. Nick Diaz was the top earner at the event, making $200,000. Nick's opponent B.J. Penn came in next at $150,000, while Cheick Kongo and Brandon Vera both collected healthy six-figure paydays as well. Here's the rundown of the whole card:

Quote:
Nick Diaz: $200,000 (no win bonus)
B.J. Penn: $150,000

Cheick Kongo: $140,000 (includes $70,000 win bonus)
Matt Mitrione: $10,000

Roy Nelson: $40,000 ($20,000 win bonus)
Mirko Filipovic: $75,000

Scott Jorgensen: $33,000 ($16,500 win bonus)
Jeff Curran: $8,000

Hatsu Hioki: $30,000 (includes $15,000 win bonus)
George Roop: $8,000

Donald Cerrone: $54,000 ($27,000 win bonus)
Dennis Siver: $27,000

Bart Palaszewski: $28,500 ($10,000 win bonus)*
Tyson Griffin: $25,500*

Brandon Vera: $120,000 ($60,000 win bonus)
Eliot Marshall: $15,000

Ramsey Nijem: $20,000 ($10,000 win bonus)
Danny Downes: $4,000

Francis Carmont: $12,000 ($6,000 win bonus)
Chris Camozzi: $8,000

Clifford Starks: $12,000 ($6,000 win bonus)
Dustin Jacoby: $6,000

*Griffin gave up 25% of his purse to Palaszewski for missing weight. There was no actual fine since the contract was re-drawn up before the fight.
This doesn't include the performance bonuses that were handed out after the card, in which Diaz and Penn won an additional 75k each for fight of the night, Donald Cerrone won 75k for submission of the night, and Bart Palaszewski won 75k for knockout of the night. Obviously these numbers don't include any other discretionary bonuses handed out by the promotion either.

...

that may seem like a lot of dough, but remember that most UFC fighters only fight about 2-4 times a year and unlike NBA players, for example, have to pay for their gym and coaching fees.

nick diaz famously sulked that he couldn't afford to pay boxing coaches leading up to the penn fight. not saying that really mattered to the fight itself, but it's another example that not even the top athletes in MMA make close to the average money that athletes in MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL and many soccer leagues make.

top fighters usually get pay per view share % and other compensation packages

for instance.. ufc 126 silva vs belfort

salaries reported to commission were:
silva $200,000
belfort $275,000

i dont think anyone will believe that belfort actually made more than silva

machida asked for "anderson silva money" to step into fight rashad evans.. so its definitely a substantial amount when added all up. since machida had a higher reported salary at ufc 129 when he faced couture than silva did at ufc 126

also,

when randy couture was in contract talks with ufc in 2007, there was a leak of ppv cut info... you can read it here. also mentions and speculates how much gsp made at ufc 129

Saw this on Wikipedia. Anyone know if both these fights have actually been announced to be on the same card?

UFC 143 From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Announced bouts
Welterweight Championship bout: George St. Pierre (c) vs. Nick Diaz[1]
Middleweight Championship bout: Anderson Silva (c) vs. Chael Sonnen[2]
