there's always some grey area of course, but it's two pretty distinct cases.

Funny you bring this up.

The two substances he got busted for:

Clomid - is one of the three most popular PCT(post-cycle therapy) compounds in bodybuilding circles to get your natural testosterone production/gonads going again, along with nolva and HCG. It's actually the least effective of the three imo. He was either juicing and tried to stop far enough before his fight to not get caught and jumped on Clomid for his PCT, or he was using Clomid to get his gonads going again since TRT is now banned(right?). Kind of unfair to make a TRT user stop cold-turkey without proper PCT because it's still a form of roiding. Don't know the circumstances around his TRT regimen though.

Arimidex - is a breast cancer treatment compound, which is taken by athletes while they're still on their cycle to reduce/prevent gyno(gynecomastia), aka bitch tits. I believe it also sheds some water bloat that you get when you take testosterone. Some men get gyno during puberty, and it can go away or linger. If a man didn't have gyno during puberty but shows signs of it later, it is a CLEAR sign of juicing. It is EXTREMELY difficult to manipulate your hormone levels to the point of getting gyno if you're not juicing unless you're a teen.
***THIS is why I have suspicions about GSP(and maybe Rashad) juicing. He showed signs of gyno during some of his fights and not in others iirc. This is kind of funny but the way bodybuilders temporarily combat gyno is to lick your fingers and squeeze your nipples so they harden, like what happens when you're cold and wet at the beach for example. It's cosmetic and only lasts for a little while. GSP, Rashad, Jardine, Jackson camp brushed it off as an "inside joke/good luck" thing right before a fight but I'm calling BS on that.***

Anyway, if only Clomid was found in Chael's system, it would be reasonable to assume that he was on PCT b/c he isn't allowed to do TRT anymore, but the fact that Arimidex was also in his system shows that he is clearly still juicing...UNLESS he was taking it during TRT, I don't know how long he's been off TRT, but it's still an illegal substance anyway. Also, he has been juiced to the gills his whole life.

You add in the obvious competitive benefits of doping for an MMA fighter and I really don't see how the news Sonnen has been doping could be a surprise.
yea, yea... i know. another day on ISH where everything's either black or f-cking white. not to mention, conflation of the general juicing / TRT issue with chael's specific issue. bravo, dude.

in any event, i was responding to "are you surprised chael got caught?" as opposed to "are you surprised chael seems to be doping?" it's two related but separate issues. like i said, OF COURSE i'm surprised because normally he manages all this well. and i said "normally," see? aside from his one bust, okay?

the ins and outs of his TRT / juicing and all that is the last thing i would bother debating because i just don't have enough information to know for sure. nice to have lefthook come along and drop some knowledge tho. bravo to that, with sincerity.

so, UFC 174.

Demetrious Johnson vs. Ali Bagautinov
Rory MacDonald vs. Tyron Woodley
Ryan Bader vs. Rafael Cavalcante
Andrei Arlovski vs. Brendan Schaub
Ryan Jimmo vs. Ovince St. Preux

bolded are my picks, but i'm mainly just pulling them from my ass. mighty mouse and OSP i feel confident about and that's it.

ares vs woodley should be fascinating. i mean, both can lay duds or beatdowns, depending on stuff that the public usually has no idea about.

i got jumped by two young black dudes on monday night coming back late from the sushi place.

one of the only times i drop my defenses is after a restaurant (had drinks) and... kaboom. but i guess that's kinda the point.

1st guy tackled me from side/back, but managed to tie him up in guard. gave it back and forth with him a bit (knuckles a mess), but mainly i was just trying to keep him wrapped up so i could talk some sense to them. 2nd guy picked my pockets, stole some bucks and my 4G smartphone. (haha good riddance to that POS overrated thing)

whole thing was over in less than 60secs. neighbor alerted cops, but i did get a mild concussion and lightly damaged the retina in my right eye. started seeing flashes and floaters pretty heavily, which apparently happens a lot from head trauma. just kinda amazed you don't hear about it more from MMA fighters.

stay trained and keep your guard up, bros.

I swear Dana and his partner that run the UFC are geniuses. International Fight Week Event is genius. I can see that turning into a huge event people go to every year since you can watch the martial arts amateur championships too, along with tons of other martial arts events and activities.

and this Q&A stage they're doing right now answering questions, talking real blunt, and basically Dana telling it like it is is just something you rarely see. i love the way they run their organization, extremely fan friendly.

so torn. love both machida and weidman. basically been intrigued by machida since he entered ufc and i went nuts when he won the title. then he faced another of my favs (top 5) in shogun. so all of that was bittersweet. shogun sort of laid the blueprint on how to beat him in his second fight.

really don't know. i don't think weidman gets the respect he deserves. he was dominating that second fight with silva in his second fight and he still has this 'fluke' cloud hanging over his head. he was beating silva in every aspect of that fight so it's such a black and white way of looking at things and there's been breakdowns of this.

it's a hard fight to predict. the key for machida is to stuff takedowns and land counters. if he circles around and lands counters, i favor him heavily in a decision. he also has that KO ability, which will be set up if he stuffs takedowns.

however, weidman has KO ability too and uses a lot of wrestling prowess to set that up. not sure machida has faced an upper level, explosive wrestler like weidman. if it goes to the ground for long periods, i favor weidman via gnp or sub.

this might be machida's last title shot unless he can keep it close enough that a rematch is in order. he's still fast and hasn't taken a ton of damage, but he is 36.
