so, a rematch with cain will be junior's next title defense.
certainly it's the right fight to make given that overeem and cormier will be unavailable. but as much as i like cain, it's hard to know how he can take this fight. JDS seems to have gotten even better with his in-and-out footwork and TDD. cain says that he needs to swarm junior next time, but that's easier said than done. the dude has vicious uppercuts to answer that approach and slick footwork to dance backwards even while throwing bombs against a swarming opponent.
it almost seems to me that you need some kind of floor-based fighter to solve dos santos. someone on his fingers and toes (like jon jones sometimes starts fights) who doesn't put his upper body out there to be attacked... someone who's a grappling machine and is able to attack junior's legs somehow.
or maybe just an excellent kickboxer with a dynamite teep to keep junior at bay. thus, maybe overeem really was the biggest threat to get that done. i really don't know...
I think dos santos is obviously the favorite in that fight but Cain presents a much bigger challenge than people are giving him credit for. He's the best wrestler in the hw division and he has very good striking to go along with the best cardio of any hw. It's definitely not out of the realm of possibility that he wins that fight. If not Cain, you are basIcally just waiting till jones moves up to hw to give anyone a chance
I feel very iffy about Jones being able to have the same kind of impact at HW as he does at LHW. A lot of his attacks would probably just bounce off the bigger HW's. He's already had issues with broken hands-- imagine how that would go trying to punch Shane Carwin, Mark Hunt, etc.
Supposedly Jones walks around at 230+ between camps, but that's still on a long, thin frame. Dunno how much further you can really take that...
I'm not sure how his game would work at hw either but whether or not he'd be a viable hw isn't the question, it's whether he'd present a problem for dos santos and I think he would. It's interesting because both of them would be on the exact opposite end of the spectrum than they normally are. Jones is generally bigger and stronger and just rag dolls people in the clinch while dos santos is normally faster and more athletic. Jds is bigger and probably stronger than jones and jones is significantly faster and more athletic than jds
