Also, that episode sucked. As usual, absolutely nothing happened until the last five minutes (where something cool finally happened).

I think that Gay dude was Renly your talking about. He's King Robert's younger brother, younger brother to Stannis as well, and he's making a play for the throne under the feeling that Joffrey isn't actually King Robert's kid. Although he's conveniently overlooking the fact that Stannis is in fact his older brother. But he's kind of a man of the people, which they hinted at in the first season.

HBO playing up the gay angle is kind of funny considering how the people, including Brienne, love Renly and all the maidens want Loras.

John Snow's adventures beyond the Wall will make you shit bricks, well worth the wait. In the meantime enjoy Maergery Tyrell.

here's a quick spoiler free summary for people who havent read the books and are a little confused about the players. Season 2 is based on Clash of the Kings. (book 2) It basically covers the fights between all of the people who want to claim the Iron Throne, or carve out a kingdom of their own after Robert's death. The main players and their claim are:

Joffrey Baratheon: King Robert's supposed son and heir, but is in actuality a Lannister born from the incest between Cersei and her twin brother, Jaimie. He currently holds the Iron Throne but is facing challengers from all sides.

Stannis Baratheon: King Robert's older brother and the true heir to the throne. Unfortunately, he is a stern and uncharismatic Lord and not very well loved. Stannis has very little support in the 7 Kingdoms.

Renly Baratheon: King Robert's younger brother. Although Stannis has the better claim, Renly is far more loved and supported. Most of the major families support Renly's bid for the crown even though it is not rightfully his.

Rob Stark: Ed Stark's eldest son. He doesn't want the Iron Throne but has decided to secede from the 7 Kingdoms and revert the North back to an independent territory like it used to be. His aim is to avenge his father and become "King of the North"

Balon Greyjoy: Leader of the Greyjoy clan which rules the Iron Islands. He doesn't want the Iron Throne. About a decade ago he led a revolt to secede from the 7 Kingdoms but was defeated by Robert and Eddard. He is taking advantage of the current turmoil to revolt again and this time wants an independent Iron Islands and also claim much of the shoreline along the North for his own.

Daenerys Targaryen: Last (known) survivor of the Targaryan clan. She doesn't have much to do with Westeros right now since she is trying to survive on another continent. Her ultimate goal however, is to raise an army and eventually return to Westeros and reclaim the Iron Throne which she believes is still rightfully hers.

Mance Rayder: is a former Night's Watch who defected. He is known as "King Beyond the Wall" and is the unofficial leader of the wildlings. He is currently amassing a huge wildling army but much of the south is still unaware of his threat.

^^^so these are the major players who are all vying for a crown or throne of some sort in season 2. Hope this helps. All of this turmoil could have ended quickly if the brothers Renly and Stannis would have just set aside their differences and joined forces. The Lannisters got really lucky that most of their enemies dislike each other as well (like Tyrion mentioned earlier). Just one decent alliance and it would have been all over for Joffrey.

Solid break down my friend

And yeah it seems so choatic that dispite the Lannisters being the most hated, everyone else has their own issues with people and agendas where it sort of plays into the Lannisters hands. They cant take on all of these groups but if they fight amongst themselves? Win for them.

Thanks for breaking down the Iron island thing.

the king's bastard is the older black haired kid that was standing next to arya... when they were making their escape from that barn or wherever they were, the blond kid who ended up having his throat 'needled' saw the bastard's wolf helmet and took it. it seemed like he did it to protect the real bastard, though that was left ambiguous. point is, robert's bastard is still alive and well thanks to arya's quick thinking.

i like what they did with renly this episode. i didn't get much of a 'man of the people' vibe from him either in the first season or in the first 2/3's or so of the book i've waded through, but just the one scene established it nicely, calling that labourer by name, willing to talk to cat on friendly terms even though she seemed hardly to expect it. i'd say he's the "good king" of the bunch without question. they also did well with the tyrell siblings, the paranoia of the world finding out, etc.

big foreshadowing scene between tyrion and varys, that relationship is going to keep going very strong i think. they each have a vested respect for one another while staying wary of the other's tricks. i'm expecting big things from those two.

i'm not sure how to feel about pycell getting the flip for being the queen's spy. in the series it makes good sense i guess, i always just took him for a leftover of past regimes, scrambling to find some use for himself that could appease his superiors, and largely devoid of much cunning himself. especially in the first season his monologue on kings was rather empty of substance. as far as i've gotten into the first book, he's portrayed very differently, much wiser and with sage advice for those he spoke with, especially ned, instead of being merely another lannister henchman. eh

that's possible too, didn't think of that. but then, he had a chance to say something before he accidentally ran his throat into that blade, he might have reaped reward for it too, and he held his tongue. but maybe, he wasn't given long to pipe up. that might be in the books.

yeah, the other alternative is just to sell it. that's probable, i reckon if he had intended to sacrifice himself for gendry, some relationship would have been established earlier on to lay some foundation for a bond between some of the convict kids.

As a person who hasnt read all the books(I only a couple of chapters away from finishing the first book) this last episode was frustrating not because it sucked but because i want more!

Some thoughts no spoilers just speculation and stuff like that.

1.Renly Baratheon.I want to see this huge army of his and exactly which houses are committed to him is it only half baratheon and the rest tyrell?

Is he gonna accept letting the starks become become their own kingdom and not part of the 7 if he takes the throne?I wonder how much his wife is gonna play in his confidence. It seems to me he lacks confidence. How is he gonna react to his brother stannis and robb.

2.I really like Tyrion but i hate the lannisters i kinda want tyrion to lose for some reason but i dont want him to die so iam not sure how its gonna play out.

3.Im wating for ser barristan to make an appearance and pledge himself to one of the many kings.

Really getting into this shit.

I hope this season picks up the pace a bit soon. I have been a little disappointed by the first 3 episodes, seems like there is not that much going on compared to the first few episodes of season 1, and also they arent giving joffrey or aria enough screen time. Tyrion is great but im getting kind of bored of watching him have the same conversation with the queen every week.
